The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has visited Kaduna State, two days after a deadly military air strike that killed at least 85 people and injured several others.

The army chief’s move is also for an on-the-spot assessment of the community and to condole with the families of the victims.

Sunday’s incident is one of the country’s deadliest military bombing accidents.

Earlier, the army acknowledged one of its drones aimed at armed groups had accidentally struck the Tudun Biri village as residents were celebrating a Muslim festival. Though the army did not give any casualty figures, residents had said 85 people, many of them women and children, had been killed.

It also said its drone was a routine mission that “inadvertently affected members of the community.”

As people observed the Maulud holiday in northern Kaduna, Nigeria, a military drone strike mistakenly killed 85 civilians. More than 60 people were injured.

Army spokesman Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu said that troops carrying out aerial patrols observed a group of people and "wrongly analyzed and misinterpreted their pattern of activities to be similar to that of the bandits" before the drone strike.

"Twelve children died in my home. Six are mine, and six belonged to my brother," one Tudun Biri resident said Tuesday.

Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu ordered a thorough investigation on Tuesday. Tinubu, who is attending the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, called Sunday night's incident a "bombing mishap," which was "very unfortunate, disturbing, and painful," his spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said in a statement.

The armed forces of Nigeria have acknowledged that a drone strike on Sunday unintentionally killed at least 85 people who were attending a Muslim festival in the northwest. Residents of Tudun Biri, in the state of Kaduna, had congregated for the Maulud celebration when, at approximately nine o'clock at night, they heard an enormous explosion followed by what sounded like an airliner.
