They arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja at 4.29 am on Sunday aboard a chartered Maxair flight.

A group of nearly 300 girls who were kidnapped from a school in north-western Nigeria last week have been released, a local official says.

The girls were abducted by gunmen from their boarding school in Jangebe, Zamfara state, on Friday and taken to a forest, police said.

The state's governor said on Tuesday that the group had been freed and the girls were now safe.

The 2014 kidnap of 276 schoolgirls in the north-eastern town of Chibok by Islamist militants Boko Haram brought global attention to the scourge of raids on schools in Nigeria, but a surge in recent attacks is suspected to be the work of criminal gangs.

Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari has laughed off rumours that he was dead and had been replaced by a clone. Buhari spent five months in Britain last year being treated for an undisclosed illness. ‘A lot of people hoped that I was dead,’ he said, calling those who spread the rumour ‘ignorant and irreligious’. The rumour were so prevalent the vice president had people calling up to apply for vacant positions. No evidence has been presented for the clone claim. There have been international calls for an end to violence in Nigeria after widespread reports of the killing of civilians.

The human rights group Amnesty International says it has received credible and disturbing evidence that Nigerian security forces shot and killed at least 12 people taking part in a peaceful protest in the country's largest city, Lagos.

There have been weeks of demonstrations against police brutality, with protesters accusing the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad - or SARS - of torture.
