At least one human and 13 cattle, sheep, and goats have perished in a West African anthrax pandemic, putting countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, and Burkina Faso in jeopardy.

In the Binduri District of Ghana, there were 13 human cases two weeks before these fatalities.

Because of this, Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has recommended its citizens to stop consuming cow products, especially the skin popularly known as ponmo.

Thousands of Haitians demonstrated Monday in Port-au-Prince to protest against the government and its call for foreign assistance to deal with endemic insecurity, a humanitarian crisis and a burgeoning cholera epidemic.

A day after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for immediate deployment of a special international armed force in Haiti to help the crisis-hit Caribbean state, the demonstration in the capital was marred by violence, with police using tear gas to disperse looters, an AFP correspondent said.

In South Africa, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicide have persisted as a significant national problem, deeply rooted in a patriarchal system that manifests through various socio-economic and cultural behavioural patterns. These patterns include high levels of inequality, poverty, racism, unequal gender power relations, hostile gender relations, and intolerance to gender diversity.

According to the Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, the most concerning aspect of GBVF is that women, children, persons with disabilities, and the LGBTQIA+ community bear the brunt, with their rights often violated. In a proactive step towards finding tangible solutions and addressing what has been declared the second pandemic for the country, the Minister of Social Development, in collaboration with the National Shelter Movement South Africa, hosted the 3rd National Shelter Indaba in Johannesburg during the week.

The summit aimed to bring together stakeholders and experts to discuss strategies and initiatives to combat Gender-Based Violence and femicide in South Africa. The collective efforts of government agencies, social organisations, and advocacy groups are crucial to creating a safer and more secure environment for vulnerable populations and working towards the eradication of GBV and femicide. Bongani Siziba provides more insight into the summit's proceedings.
