Political campaigns are underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo ahead of December's general elections. This time, more than 20 candidates are vying for the top job. The country had its first peaceful transition of power in 2019, when the current President Felix Tshisekedi took power. Now he's asking voters to trust him to lead for another term. But critics say he's failed to deliver on promises to end conflict, corruption and economic inequality.
The DRC is the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa. It shares borders with 9 neighbors and is key to regional stability. It has globally significant natural resources such as cobalt, copper and diamonds.
Despite this, many Congolese people are shut out of the country’s mineral wealth. The World Bank says the DRC is one of the five poorest nations in the world. Conflict and instability have plagued the DRC for decades. And there are concerns that the electoral process won’t be as free and fair as it should be.

A former adviser to Barack Obama said that killing 4,000 Palestinian children “wasn’t enough” during a racist and islamophobic rant to a food vendor.
In videos shared on social media, Stuart Seldowitz can be heard asking someone off-camera whether they raped their “daughter like Muhammad did”.
“Muhammad, your prophet ... He was a rapist,” he said.
Mr Seldowitz was acting director for the National Security Council South Asia Directorate under President Obama, a senior political officer and was deputy director in the US State Department’s Office of Israel and Palestinian Affairs from 1999 to 2003.
Most recently he served as foreign affairs chair for Gotham Government Relations, which cut ties with him following the release of the videos.
Mr Seldowitz has since apologised for the incident.
Speaking to City & State on Tuesday night, he said: “I regret the whole thing happened and I’m sorry ... In the heat of the moment, I said things that probably I shouldn’t have said.”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa made strong accusations against Israel, labeling their actions in Gaza as war crimes and tantamount to genocide during a virtual meeting of leaders from developing countries, including Russia's Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping.
Ramaphosa didn't spare criticism for Hamas, condemning their attack on Israeli civilians that triggered the conflict and asserting that both sides were in violation of international law.
According to Ramaphosa, "The collective punishment of Palestinian civilians through the unlawful use of force by Israel is a war crime." He also expressed concern about the deliberate denial of essential resources, stating, "The deliberate denial of medicine, fuel, food, and water to the residents of Gaza is tantamount to genocide."
In addressing Hamas, Ramaphosa stated, "In its attacks on civilians and by taking hostages, Hamas has also violated international law and must be held accountable for these actions."
Contrastingly, Putin and Xi took a more cautious stance, calling for a cease-fire and the release of civilian hostages without delivering the same level of criticism towards either side as Ramaphosa did.

Israel's Foreign Ministry has recalled its Ambassador to South Africa for consultations following what it referred to as the "latest statements from South Africa." This comes just over a week after Ambassador Eliav Belotsercovsky was demarched or formally reprimanded by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation over conduct described by DIRCO as unfortunate in relation to the unfolding war between Israel and Hamas. Sierra Leone where after months of post-election unrest in the West African nation, government has imposed a nationwide curfew on the country. This follows what it called an attempt by “some unidentified individuals to break into the military armoury at the Wilberforce Barracks” in the nation’s capital Freetown this morning.
The barracks is near the Presidential Lodge. A statement by the Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah said the individuals have all been repelled. President Julius Bio also confirmed the alleged attack and the blanket curfew on the country from his social media X handle.
