The Nigerian Government has officially declared a state of emergency in the health sector, acknowledging the critical state of the nation's health facilities. The declaration was made during the 64th National Council on Health held in Ekiti.

Muhammed Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, emphasised the urgent need for intervention, citing the poor condition of health facilities. This move comes in response to the deteriorating state of the health sector, as highlighted by concerns raised at various levels.

Last month, the House of Representatives called on the government to declare a state of emergency in the health sector and allocate significant funds to address the crisis in the 2024 budget. The declaration underscores recognition of the severity of the challenges facing the health sector and signals a commitment to addressing these issues through decisive measures.

Kenya's government says that its police officers will not be deployed to Haiti until all conditions on training and funding are met in line with last month’s approval from the UN security council to give the Eastern African country command of a multinational mission to combat violent gangs in the troubled Caribbean country. Meanwhile, Haiti is reporting a fresh round of gang-related killings and kidnappings as it awaits help.

In Southern Africa, Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera has taken measures to curb government spending by implementing a travel ban for himself and his administration. This decision comes in the wake of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) approval of a $175 million loan for the country.

As part of the cost-saving measures, President Chakwera has opted to skip the scheduled attendance at the COP28 climate summit later this month in the UAE. Additionally, he has directed all cabinet members currently abroad on publicly funded trips to return home promptly.

Furthermore, there is an order for a 50-percent reduction in fuel allowances for senior government officials. These austerity measures aim to support Malawi's struggling national economy and come alongside the recent devaluation of the nation's currency by 44% as part of the conditions for obtaining the IMF loan.

South Africa's ruling party - the ANC - will elect a new leader this weekend. The election is happening at a time of internal turmoil for the only ruling party South Africa has known since democratic elections in 1994. Its current party leader and South African President Jacob Zuma will step down but the candidates to replace him have deeply divided the party. Lynsey Chutel reports.

Mining experts in West Africa are urging governments and mining stakeholders to prioritise the consideration of host communities' rights before embarking on any mining activities. They emphasise that neglecting these rights may perpetuate insecurity in the subregion, posing significant obstacles to growth and development.

The experts contend that recognising and respecting the rights of host communities is essential for fostering sustainable and mutually beneficial relationships between mining operations and the communities they impact. Failure to do so, they argue, can lead to heightened tensions and conflicts and hinder overall progress.

This call for attention to community rights aligns with a broader push for responsible and ethical mining practises across the West African region. The experts highlight the interconnectedness of community welfare and the success of mining endeavours, emphasising the need for collaborative efforts to create an environment where both economic development and social harmony can thrive.

Amadin Uyi provides insights and details on the perspectives shared by these mining experts, shedding light on the importance of addressing community rights in the context of mining activities in West Africa.

It's been a very messy few weeks for coalition politics in the country.

The City of Johannesburg has a new mayor after a coalition collapse, and a motion of no confidence is also on the cards in Ekurhuleni.

So with municipal governments under coalition agreements being so unstable, what does this mean for 2024, where there is a huge possibility of a national coalition having to be made?

Newzroom Afrika’s Nic Andersen filed this report.

Tune into Newzroom Afrika channel 405 for more.
