Despite facing social and economic issues and conflicts, East Africa is still at the forefront of the long-standing goal to unite Africa. The region's trade partnerships, economic cooperation, and shared resources have made it one of the most innovative in Africa. Furthermore, its efforts to unify the region's currency is a unique and ambitious strategy.

Even among the most progressive regions in the world, ideas like this are often avoided. Economies around the world that do not have a closely shared history often prefer to steer clear of the topic. But East Africa is different - the region is not only insistent on creating a unified currency, but also actively pushing for its realization

Somaliland is a self-declared state in practice even though technically it's still seen as being part of Somalia. This lack of diplomatic recognition makes it difficult to keep development plans on track. The country's GDP is estimated to be about 3.5 billion euros, for around 5 million inhabitants, an extremely small sum. Though Hargeisa insists it's politically stable compared to its Somali and Ethiopian neighbors, attracting international investment is still difficult.. FRANCE 24's correspondent Bastien Renouil tells us more.

At the #ACS23 Leaders' Event co-convened by the Global Center on Adaptation and the African Development Bank Group, President Akinwumi Adesina described the newly launched #AAAP Country Compacts as "a framework that is clear, transparent, accountable in delivering the money" for #climateadaptation action.

African Leaders joined top representatives of global and regional institutions during the Africa Climate Summit to guide a resilient transformation for Africa in light of the climate emergency fallout on the region.

Leaders highlighted their key messages in the Leaders' Communique: https://gca.org/news/leaders-c....ommunique-africas-ad

-------------------------

The Global Center on Adaptation is an international organization working as a solutions broker to accelerate action and support for adaptation solutions, from the international to the local, in partnership with the public and private sector, to ensure we learn from each other and work together for a climate-resilient future.

Founded in 2018, our global headquarters is hosted by the Netherlands in the largest floating office in the world in Rotterdam, with regional offices in Africa, South Asia and Asia Pacific, and a knowledge and research hub based in Groningen. Through our evolving network of offices, we engage in innovative solutions to drive adaptation at scale, high-level policy development, new research contributions, advocacy, communications, and work with our partners to deliver action on the ground.

Our work focuses on those who are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change including the poorest people in the poorest countries. They are the least prepared to withstand the triple health, social and economic impacts of our climate emergency.

Since 2021, the Africa-owned and Africa-led Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), has been the implementation vehicle of the vision of the Africa Adaptation Initiative, with proven results to scale adaptation. Co-designed between the African Development Bank and the Global Center on Adaptation, and endorsed by the African Union, the AAAP is mobilizing $25 billion in climate-resilient investments by 2025. In its first 24 months, the AAAP has integrated adaptation into over $5.4 billion of investments, securing resilient development objectives across 27 African countries.
