Presidential election in the Comoro Islands was held peacefully on Sunday from a crowded field of 25 candidates. About 159,000 voters participated in the election.

According to observers, the election was held peacefully, however, there were delays in the polling stations.

Election centres in the country of less than one million people officially opened early in the morning although some voters were delayed due to late arrival of voting materials.

Voters in the Indian Ocean archipelago of the Comoros head to the polls on Sunday for the second round of presidential elections.

Comoros' ruling party has won an absolute majority in the first round of legislative elections boycotted by the country's opposition.

According to official results, President Azali Assoumani's Convention for the Renewal of the Comoros party won 17 out of 24 legislative seats, while two other seats went to parties in the presidential coalition.

Polls open in the small archipelago of Comoros as President Azali Assoumani looks set to win a new term in an election that rivals say has been hijacked.

The president of Comoros has said he is ready to bring forward the date of the presidential poll. The tense Indian Ocean archipelago has a system of rotating presidency but Sambi's term was extended by 18 months in a 2009 referendum. Duration: 01:15.

Security was tightened on Wednesday in Comoros as 13 polling stations returned to the polls in a partial re-run of the presidential election. Polling stations were open from 7 am on Wednesday, which had been declared a public holiday.

Riot police were deployed in the island of Anjouan, after the second round of presidential elections held on April 10 were marred by irregularities and violence.
