China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi concluded his tour of Africa in Ivory Coast, Thursday, where he met with President Alassane Ouattara, who said relations between the two nations were "strong," saying their meeting which lasted for over an hour will "benefit not only the Ivory Coast."

"We are truly grateful to the Ivorian side for giving us its firm support on issues affecting our vital interests, including the Taiwan question," said Yi during a press conference with President Ouattara.

Wang began his tour of Africa on Sunday that saw him visit countries like Egypt, Togo and Tunisia.

On Thursday, the U.S. State Department announced that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will embark on a tour of sub-Saharan Africa for the first time in almost a year. Beginning Monday, Blinken will visit Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Angola and Cape Verde, as rivals Russia and China seek gains there.

The United Nations Security Council has lifted a 12-year sanctions regime on Cote D'Ivoire and renewed for one more cycle the UN Mission to the country. The world's top cocoa producer has been lauded for its political and economic progress since the political uncertainty that began in 2004 culminating in an electoral crisis in 2010 that later saw the arrest of former President Laurent Gbagbo who now faces trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The mission UNOCI of almost 7000 troops and police will be completely withdrawn by June of next year.

United Nations, New York, 15 February, 2011 - The United Nations refugee agency has begun setting up a new camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in western Côte d'Ivoire who fled their homes as a result of violence and uncertainty related to the current post-election political crisis in the West African country.

"Humanitarian conditions have deteriorated with the shortage of shelter and our hope is that the new camp will ease pressure, in particular for the most vulnerable," Melissa Fleming, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR ), told reporters in Geneva. The agency has so far registered a total of 38,600 IDPs in western Côte d'Ivoire.

Civilians in Democratic Republic of Congo are fleeing their homes near the eastern city of Goma, amid fears that the M23 rebel group are advancing.

There are reports that the Congolese army has been fighting the militia near the town of Sake.

Tens of thousands of people have been displaced in recent months after the Tutsi-led rebels launched an offensive.

Ten years ago the same group was chased out of eastern DR Congo into Uganda and Rwanda.Rwanda's government has been accused of supporting the M23, but it denies it.

Rwanda has for many years criticised the Congolese authorities for failing to disarm Hutu rebels - some of whom were linked to the Rwandan genocide.

What's causing the conflict in DR Congo?

Violence in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo has escalated in recent months, resulting in thousands of people fleeing and hundreds being killed.

Amid the rising unrest, tensions between DR Congo and its neighbouring country, Rwanda, have reached an all-time low as the two countries continue to blame each other for the crisis in the east.

These tensions threaten to undermine ongoing peace efforts in the region – prolonging the instability.

So how did this all begin? And what's being done about it? Joice Etutu explains.

Rebels from the ethnic Tutsi-led m23 movement are blocking the two main roads into Goma from the north and the west and preventing produce from getting through.

Goma's population has swelled in recent days with people running from the advancing fighters.

Re-elected president Felix Tshisekedi is now dealing with a multi-pronged crisis....one from the capital and the other from the countryside, will he be able to stem the rebellion? Only time will tell.
