Botswana has inaugurated Mogweetsi Masisi as its new president.

The former vice president takes over from Ian Khama, who stepped down after his term limit was reached. Elections will be held next year.

Many say that they do not believe the new president is going to move far from Khama's socialist policies, which focused on poverty eradication, particularly in rural areas.

People expect President Masisi will keep in line with that, but they also hope he will have his own ideas and vision.

Al Jazeera's Catherine Soi reports from Gaborone.

The once solid Botswana opposition is now fragmented and a new party has been formed as a result. This is considered a serious knock on the oppositions' chances of ever ruling the landlocked country of just over two million people. In 2014 a coalition of opposition parties, called the Umbrella for Democratic Change won 20 seats out of the 57 contested parliament seats, the highest number of seats the opposition has ever won in Botswana.
