The IMF’s African Department is pleased to host Michael Kremer, Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, where he directs the Development Innovation Lab. He is the joint winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics for the “experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”

While African countries are grappling with the fallout of exogenous shocks like Russia’s war in Ukraine and climate change, the continent’s leaders are also trying to tackle persistent structural issues. Healthcare services are under strain, as is education, with low enrollment and high dropout rates for children who in the next 5–10 years will provide about half of the world’s increase in working-age population.

Agriculture, a vital sector for food security and economic growth in the region, is constrained by low productivity, the impact of climate change, and limited access to modern technologies. Furthermore, economic growth remains stifled by insufficient investment and infrastructure, weak institutions, high unemployment, and income inequality.

Join us for a conversation between Professor Kremer and the IMF’s African Department Director, Abebe Aemro Selassie, to learn more about the key measures policymakers can take to address regional challenges as well as global ones like climate change and pandemics.

Kenya is deploying a force of 1,000 police officers to Haiti to fight criminal gangs that have taken control of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince.

However, Kenya is not the first foreign intervention in Haiti; Brazil led a mission from 2004 to 2016, with a mixed outcome.

But can Kenya succeed where others have failed? And what awaits them?

The BBC News Africa's Ian Wafula and BBC News Brasil's Mariana Sanches explain.

Images of thousands of African youth drowning in the Mediterranean, propelled by poverty or conflict at home and lured by the hope of jobs abroad, have fed a misleading narrative that migration from Africa harms rather than helps the continent. The latest edition of the UNCTAD flagship Economic Development in Africa Report takes aim at this preconceived notion and assesses the evidence to identify policy pathways that harness the benefits of African migration and mitigate its negative effects.

This year, 2018, offers the international community a historic opportunity to realize the first global compact for migration, an intergovernmentally negotiated agreement in preparation under the auspices of the United Nations. Our contribution to this historic process is the Economic Development in Africa Report 2018: Migration for Structural Transformation.

Migration benefits both origin and destination countries across Africa. The report argues that African migration can play a key role in the structural transformation of the continent’s economies. Well-managed migration also provides an important means for helping to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, both in Africa and beyond.

Russia would regard any return of U.S. nuclear weapons to bases in Britain as an "escalation and a destabilizing practice," foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a briefing on Tuesday (September 5).

"We will continue to demand the return of all American nuclear weapons to U.S. territory, followed by the removal of infrastructure that would allow them to be quickly deployed in Europe," she added.

While the COVID pandemic and war in Ukraine have caused economic shocks throughout Africa, the dire socioeconomic conditions in parts of the continent are also a product of how global, multilateral finance institutions are organized. African countries rarely have access to the development funds they need — and when they do, it’s often on stringent terms. Meanwhile, the continent’s socioeconomic struggles continue to exacerbate political and security crises as well. Solomon Dersso, founding director of Amani Africa, discusses the 2023 African Union Summit’s renewed focus on reforming development and trade and the importance of framing U.S.-Africa ties as a partnership built on mutual interests rather than a means to counter China or Russia.

In a significant declaration, President Akufo Addo of Ghana has emphatically asserted that Africa is no longer willing to tolerate unfair treatment in the global economic landscape. Ghana president speech during the BRICS Summit 2023, President Addo's draw attention to the growing significance of BRICS - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa - as a compelling alternative for African countries seeking to diversify their trade and investment avenues. The BRICS consortium, known for its proactive stance on promoting equitable international trade, established the New Development Bank (NDB) to foster sustainable economic growth and infrastructure development. Anyone of a certain age will remember the massive hit that was “We Are The World,” the Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, and Quincy Jones produced charity single by USA for Africa. The considerable profits from the that hit song went to the USA for Africa Foundation, which used them for the relief of famine and disease in Africa and specifically to 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia.

Even though Africa is an enormous and diverse continent with 54 sovereign countries, many people in the United States, and the west more generally, were left with the impression of Africa as destitute and poverty-stricken.

What they may not realize is the enormous amount of growth and development Africa has been seeing. To help us better understand this growth and development, particularly in the country of Nigeria, today I talk with Wiebe Boer and Danladi Verheijen.

Wiebe Boer is the president of Calvin University, here in Grand Rapids, MI, and Danladi Verheijen is the co-founder and managing partner of Verod Capital Management, a leading West-African private equity investor. Today, I talk to them about their experiences growing up in Nigeria, and what they are seeing with the booming growth that country is experiencing.
