There is a direct correlation between high population growth and low level economic development in Africa. But Africa's population of a billion people, can be turned into a potent force for economic development. Joining us now on how this can be done is Jorge Maia, Head of Research at the Industrial Development Corporation.
This year is expected to see African GDP return to pre-Covid levels, with growth forecast to reach 3.7 percent. But according to a new OECD report, sustainable investment – that which benefits the economy, society and the environment – need to play a bigger role in the continent. Federico Bonaglia, deputy director of the OECD's development centre, joined France 24 to talk more about the report’s findings.

Since the creation of the China Africa Development fund, the body has become a major driving force in investment in Africa, with over 2.4 billion dollars committed to over 64 projects in 30 African countries in the last 6 years alone. With just over 1.8 billion dollars of that amount already released, the role of china in African development cannot be understated. CCTV's Peter Wakaba caught up with the fund's executive Vice President, Yong Wang, on the sidelines of the New York forum On Africa for an update on its operations on the continent.

The China-Africa Development Fund has set up shop in Kenya's capital Nairobi. The fund will serve as a gateway for positive Chinese investments in Eastern Africa and seek Chinese partners for African projects. In recent years, the west of the African continent has seen a constant occurrence of what one may term unconstitutional changes of government through coups.
In the past three years alone, the western part of the continent has seen approximately 10 coups, with a fair share of them being successful in overthrowing democratically elected governments.
The latest is the takeover in Niger, led by soldiers belonging to the presidential guard, adding to the string of coups on the continent. As a result, the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, threatened to authorise the use of force on Niger if the coup leaders did not restore Mohamed Bazoum's presidency, while the African Union had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the coup leaders in Niger to reinstall the country's democratically elected government; however, the deadlines to re-instate Bazoum lapsed on Sunday, August 6, 2023, and the coup leaders have reportedly closed the country's air space since.
