LESSON PREVIEW In this lesson I am going to show you the two conga patterns used for playing the traditional version of the Cuban Mozambique rhythm, invented by Pello El Afrokan, Mozambique was a rhythm arrangement, dance craze in cuba and NY and also a music genre pioneered by the late great Pello El Aforkan. I got a chance to meet, study and film Pello in 1985 in Cuba where I learned this rhythm from him. This is the traditional version and not the NYC version in the 60's made popular by Mr. Eddie Palmieri. Mozambique peaked in 1965, when Pello took a group to the Olympics in Paris.
We are going to learn the rhythm using build up method (a little bit at a time) as well as slow motion and front and rear angles as well. I am also going to show you how to enter the rhythm and play the rhythm with cuban rumba clave.
In this piece entitled "Spanish Guitar" I demonstrate the New York-style Mozambique. You can learn more about coordination in the New York Mozambique style in the Afro-Cuban for Drumset Book/CD package or DVD Hal Leonard publishing or groove3.com. Follow me on Instagram: @drumonwithmaria
Mozambique is a nice rhythm invented by Pello el Afrikan. It comes from the Cuban carnaval. There is a Cuban style and a New York style. In this lesson I show how to play these rhythms on 3 congas.

In this video, I'll show you how to play New York style Mozambique on 2 Congas. Listening to the legendary NYC band, "Conjunto Libre" growing up, this was the first Mozambique groove/variation I learned. Mozambique is a Cuban groove created by the legendary conguero, Pello "El Afrokan" in 1963. This is NYC's take on the original groove. Hope you guys enjoy this video!

MOZAMBIQUE (New York Style) A vigorous Cuban Carnival Street Rhythm for song and dance created by Pello el Afrokan, then again by Eddie Palmieri in New York City during the 1960's. Now heard in sections of Latin Music like Santana's "Love Of My Life" played by Raul Rekow.
Probably my favorite Rhythm & really fun to play.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any Funkier, Ben goes and pulls out a total Gadd-ism on this 180 Challenge. "Gadd-ism" is a direct reference to Steve Gadd. Stop what you're doing and go check that cat out... Now! Then hurry back here and work on this... Or work on this first, then go watch Steve Gadd when you're not aloud to make any more noise and the neighbors have gone to bed. BOOM!

► Ben is a touring/sessions drummer based in Nashville, TN. He’s often so busy that he clocks more than 300 gigs a year. Ben is an encyclopedia when it comes to drum history and what’s hot on the scene right now. When he’s not playing or teaching, Ben can be found hanging out, watching Sponge Bob with his wife Kayla, their new baby and their dog Max.
The late, great Frank Malabe taught me this version of Mozambique New York style at least 35 years ago. The first part I play with 2 drums as Frank did. In the second example, I use 3 drums for a more melodic sound, and also for a more fluid sound using all single strokes with a left hand lead. Playing this way also eliminates the need for a right hand jump over.
Mozambique, the vast African nation that is rich in both cultural heritage and natural attractions, is one of the best countries you can visit in Africa. Its long coastline on the Indian Ocean provides many white sand beaches that are perfect for diving and snorkelling. (Mozambique Travel)
The vast countryside in the north is home to natural parks and wildlife reserves, and the various small off-shore islands provide the perfect laid-back experience and a huge wealth of marine life as well. So, watch this Mozambique travel video, and take a look at the Top 10 Places to Visit in Mozambique.
