Moving now to Zimbabwe, the country’s Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube recently signed off on measures focused on increasing demand for the local currency, while arresting demand for the U.S. dollar.
These developments face resistance from both international and local traders who lost faith in the local dollar as it continues sliding against the US dollar.
News Central’s Omolola Ololade tells us more.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has issued a stern warning to entrepreneurs against selling goods using a multi-tier pricing system. About four pricing systems have emerged in Zimbabwe due to a foreign currency crisis that has affected most businesses. There are prices for the Real Time Gross Settlement system; others for mobile payment platforms, and prices for U.S. dollars and bond notes. Bond notes were introduced in November by the RBZ to fund a five percent export incentive, but they have recently become the medium of exchange after US dollar stocks diminished to precarious levels.

Banks in Zimbabwe have recorded a 50 percent increase in U.S. dollar deposits. It amounts to $450 million in both local and offshore accounts in two weeks. Zimbabwe is struggling with acute cash shortages, which has forced banks to limit daily withdrawals. U.S. dollar notes have largely disappeared -- and those holding them are selling the cash at a premium of up to 20 percent. This has affected businesses seeking to import goods. Last month the International Monetary Fund said bond notes would not solve the country's problems. The fund is calling for comprehensive reforms. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe had reduced the backlog for foreign payments by half to $185 million. Agriculture and mining are credited with driving economic revival.

Get the jab or get a new job. That's the message from the government in Zimbabwe. It's introducing a vaccination mandate for all of its nearly 300,000 public sector workers. The idea is to force those reluctant to get the jab to finally roll up their sleeves.
Across Africa, there are still not enough people getting vaccinated. Only about five percent of the African population has so far been double jabbed. That's compared to around 55 percent in Asia, 75 percent in Europe and 65 percent in South America.
A lack of vaccine is slowing the rollout across Africa. But vaccine hesitancy is also posing a growing challenge. Other African countries are also considering making vaccination mandatory for their public sector workers.
Are mandates like this the best way to stamp out vaccine hesitancy? DW's Privilege Musvanhiri sent this report from Harare.

Women face myriad challenges when they are exercising their political rights, the most alarming of which is the perceived increase in violence against women in politics (VAWP), including violence against women in elections (VAWE). Gender-based violence in politics and elections is increasingly visible, ranging from the escalation of harassment, intimidation, sexual and physical violence against women in public life and gender-biased scrutiny by the public and the media, to forced resignations and assassinations of women politicians in the most extreme cases. As elections are the main event by which formal political power is established and voting rights are realized, VAWE remains the highest barrier to women realizing their political rights.

Makokoba Market, also known as eMkambo, specializes in the sale of traditional medicines, food items, hardware components and several artistic designs used for traditional events and ceremonies. Established in 1958, the market plays an important role in the lives of people in Makokoba and the city of Bulawayo in general.

A Brief History on Makokoba:
Makokoba is a suburb of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. It was the first black African township in the city. The suburb is named after the actions of Mr Fallon, the Native Commissioner, who used walk around with a stick. The name comes from the word "ukukhokhoba" which in the local Ndebele language means "bending and walking with a stick'. It was referring to Mr Fallon as "the little old man who walks with a stick". The word actually describes the noise of the stick hitting the ground ko-ko-ko or the doors.

After a number of policy changes were made to stabilize the currency, the Zimbabwean dollar increased for the first time this year. On Tuesday, it increased 9.4% against the dollar during a weekly central bank auction. It now trades at 6,326 to the US dollar as opposed to last week.
Persistence Gwanyanya, a member of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe's monetary policy committee, claims that exchange rate volatility, a major cause of inflation, is decreasing as a sign that currency markets are stabilizing.
Another indication that the currency is stabilizing is the narrowing of the difference between official and black-market rates.
