There is an inspiring trend in the current political environment: more activists are turning to entrepreneurship, and more investors are willing to support efforts to create a stronger civic environment through enterprise. This trend has important implications for who gets funded, how power gets built in communities, and how enterprises can be a tool for transformative social change.

Joining the Transform Finance Investor Network in this webinar are Julie Menter of New Media Ventures, the first seed fund and national network of angel investors supporting media and tech startups that disrupt politics and catalyze progressive change, and Sarah Williams of Propel Capital, an investor in New Media Ventures.

In Africa with 55 countries, countless initiatives follow their visions of a prosperous Africa for everyone. The resurgence of social protest movements, environmental and climate activists, feminist women's networks, local peace initiatives, digital start-ups, creative art centers and critical intellectuals are an expression of these aspirations.

Africans Rising, the pan-African network of social protest movements for justice, peace and dignity is based on the Kilimanjaro Declaration. Africans Rising unites thousands of activists struggling in their respective national or local contexts for a better world for all. Kumi Naidoo, the former Director of Greenpeace and Amnesty Int’l, calls Africans Rising a decentralised network to “stand up for your rights and to overcome African mass traumas.”

At the beginning of the VIDC series of events “Africa. Beyond crises” we invited representatives from Africans Rising as well as from Austrian anti-racist and climate movements to talk to them about their struggles and their dreams.

In the panel discussion, we explored what visions Africans Rising is fighting for and how their struggles are linked to climate and anti-racist movements in Austria.

Organizations and activists involved in the fight against human trafficking have identified poverty as the biggest contributor to the increased trafficking of children from Nigeria and Africa. The United States estimates that over 15,000 children are trafficked from West Africa every year. This is despite efforts by governments and non-profit organizations to curb the trend.

What is Pan-Africanism? Pan-Africanism is a worldwide movement that aims to encourage and strengthen bonds of solidarity between all indigenous and diaspora ethnic groups of African descent.

We discuss how having a Pan-African mindset and being an activist can affect change as African's have their own reality that differs from that of Europeans, Asians, or Americans therefor good governance by Africans for Africans will lead to the development of Africa.

In this episode of Umoja Sessions, I am joined by Espoir Ngalukiye a non-violent activist from Congo DRC, and member of the LUCHA a non-violent and non-partisan movement. In 2018, he became national coordinator of the “Chemin de la Paix”, the vision of Dr Denis Mukwege (Nobel Peace Prize 2018). He is one of the 2019 Mandela Washington Fellowship program scholarship recipients funded by the US State Department dedicated to young African leaders.

The BBC, then the Belgian Television RTBF made a documentary on the fight within LUCHA they fought against the dictatorship by demanding the elections from 2016 to 2018, you can follow the entire documentary in French via this link https: // www.youtube.com/watch?v=SilFp92z_5k&t=11s

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Mallence Bart-Williams introduced her second home Sierra Leone and its talented people, who are part of her project FOLORUNSHO. Find out more via http://www.tedxberlin.de

Mallence Bart-Williams was born in Cologne, Germany. She is a Sierra Leonean writer and filmmaker and a German fashion designer. She pursued her studies in economics and finance in Paris, Singapore, and Great Britain. Today she lives across the globe, produces an all-natural cosmetics line in Hong Kong, and is the founder and creative director of the Freetown-based creative collective FOLORUNSHO, a ‘SHARITY’ that she initiated with street kids in Sierra Leone.

Due to her German-Sierra Leonean roots she perceives herself as a bridge connecting two vastly different worlds. Her diverse background enables her to see creative solutions to common problems. Within their three years of operation, her collective has taken homeless children off the streets and into school, developed a sneaker and clothing collection, published a book and documentary of their story, and has held fine art exhibitions. Through her work with FOLORUNSHO she connects cultural contrast, enabling people to share ideas, take action, and get results.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Production Agriculture’s reality - increasingly - involves doing battle with groups opposed to what we do, how we do it, and even our very existence. While we (grudgingly) accept this in places like California, the movement against farming is now common in “fly over country” too. In this episode I sit down with Leah Bunkers and Jim Pinkert, two members of Families Feeding Families, an organization founded to combat anti-Ag activism Yankton, SD where activists infiltrated local politics in the Ag-centric county. If it can happen in South Dakota, it can happen anywhere. In this episode I shed light on the business model and religious movement of opposing Agriculture.
