The Mandinka or Manding (Malinke, Bambara and Dioula), a western branch of the Mandé, are credited with the founding of the largest ancient West African empires. Other large Mandé speaking ethnicities include the Soninke and Susu as well as Smaller ethnic groups such as the Ligbi, Vai, and Bissa.

Plages paradisiaques, eaux transparentes, dauphins, poissons, tortues… L'archipel est la nouvelle destination en vogue pour les jeunes mariés et les riches touristes. Zanzibar appartient à la Tanzanie et, plus globalement, c'est le pays tout entier qui connaît un boum touristique. Plus d'un million de visiteurs chaque année. Un chiffre en constante augmentation : en dix ans, le nombre de voyageurs a été multiplié par trois. La Tanzanie a même détrôné son prestigieux voisin, le Kenya, régulièrement frappé par des attentats terroristes.
Mais aujourd'hui, ce paradis classé au patrimoine mondial de l'humanité par l'UNESCO est en danger. La volonté politique d'accroître le tourisme a entraîné l'implantation d'infrastructures sur les territoires des populations autochtones qui se retrouvent bien souvent expropriées, avec de dérisoires contreparties.
C'est le cas des Massaïs chassés pour laisser la place aux 4x4 des safaris. Certains d'entre eux disent avoir été chassés de leurs terres ancestrales à coup de fusil. D'autres ont choisi une voie différente que celle de la résistance : ils se sont dirigés vers les villes et se sont lancés dans l'exploitation de mines de tanzanites. Cette pierre fine, joyau du pays, qui se vend dans les plus belles bijouteries de la planète, fait la fortune de quelques hommes, mais aussi le malheur de plusieurs dizaines d'enfants qui creusent toutes les nuits avec des outils rudimentaires pour trouver la pierre qui les sortira de la misère. Si le pays attire le tourisme haut de gamme, les Tanzaniens, eux, vivent toujours dans des conditions précaires. 28 % de la population vit ainsi en dessous du seuil de pauvreté national. Et seulement 28% des jeunes étaient scolarisés dans le secondaire en 2009. Ce manque d'instruction est certainement l'un des facteurs de la perpétuation de traditions macabres.
Les enfants albinos du pays sont encore régulièrement considérés comme des « porte-bonheur » une fois mort. Un bras ou une tête peuvent s'échanger à prix d'or. Nous avons pu pénétrer dans les centres fermés qui hébergent dans une extrême précarité des enfants blonds et blancs. Ils sont emprisonnés pour rester en vie.
