In Burkina Faso, horse-riding is more than a leisure pastime, it is the tradition, the love and lore of an entire nation. With Burkina Faso's Insane Obsession with Horses it is no coincidence that the country's coat of arms depicts two horses, that the coveted prize of Africa’s biggest film festival, Fespaco held every two years in the capital, Ouagadougou, is a Golden Stallion trophy, that the nickname of the national football team is ‘Les Etalons’ which translates to The Stallions or that the most common surname for boys here is Ouedraogo, which means.. You guessed it, Stallion in the predominant native language.

In countries populated by dozens of different ethnic groups, national identity is often an elusive pursuit of identity, but here in Burkina Faso, one thing is sure: that identity reflects the country’s traditional fascination and is rooted to a longstanding relationship with a beloved animal with a mane, tail and hooves.

COULD YOU EVER TOUCH A LIVING CROCODILE?

When I arrived in Burkina Faso's capital of Ouagadougou yesterday, I was not planning to touch a living crocodile. But I did. And it was absolutely one of the scariest, most thrilling moments of my life.

Could you do ever it?

On Instagram? Join me for better stories there! @DrewBinsky

PS - No crocodiles were harmed in the making of this video. They are considered sacred to the villagers here who have been living side by side for centuries. The locals do not drug them. They do not feed them. These are simply crocs living in their natural habitat. Thanks for watching.

Hamado Bonkoungou, 40 years, works in an aviation company. In parallel, he runs a business of fattening big and small ruminants in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

In 2011, Hamado was forced to take 110 leave days from work. He found it long and was looking for something to do during that time. This is when he started to rear the animals.

The beginnings were not easy for Hamado. He was neither trained nor had the experience in livestock farming. As a result, he lost many animals when he just started. But he did not give up. Today, he is managing his farm better and is able to make profits from his investments.

For Hamado, it is passion which is most important in livestock farming. “You have to love the activity. If you do not love what you do, even if you have the money, you cannot succeed in livestock farming”, he says.

Maazou MAIGA is an agronomist and government official. In parallel, he runs a cattle feed manufacturing unit.

In Fada N’Gourma, a town in the East of Burkina Faso, Maazou comes from a family involved in livestock breeding and trade. Since his childhood, he is used to help in the family business, notably by collecting cereal brans to feed the animals.

From his personal experience, he found that it was increasingly difficult to feed animals properly. After graduating in agronomy and working for a few years as an officer of the Ministry of Agriculture, Maazou decided to install a cattle feed factory in his hometown, made from cotton seed.

“We are able to satisfy about 80% of the demand per week or about 80 tons of feed per week,” says Maazou.
