In Cape Verde, three dogs - essentially the real-life paw patrol - are protecting sea turtles from poachers. Sea turtles are still being hunted for their meat. So, when they nest on the beaches of Cape Verde, their lives are in danger. This can have a devastating impact on the turtle population.

That’s why in our eleventh mission, we’re supporting the dog trio and their human counterparts in Cape Verde to protect sea turtles and make sure their population is thriving.

Also known as the Cape Hunting Dog, Painted Dog or Painted Wolf, the African Wild Dog is one of Africa’s most misunderstood carnivores. It is recognised as Africa’s second most endangered predator (after the Ethiopian Wolf) with only between 3,000 and 5,000 left in the wild. Numbers have radically declined across Southern Africa due to habitat loss, poaching, diseases and threats from other predators.

Each pack has a dominant female, the 'alpha female', and a dominant male, the 'alpha male'. Together these two dogs are referred to as the 'alpha pair'. It is the alpha pair that determine the packs movements and are typically the only two wild dogs in the pack to breed.
