Let's be honest, we all have preconceptions about Africa before going there. But if there's one country in Africa that you may have heard good things about in the media, it's Rwanda. It's so clean and organized, they said. But reading about it is one thing, actually experiencing it was another. I wasn't expecting at all what I found in Kigali, being that the country was destroyed barely over 20 years ago. I was so shocked that I had to go and support Rwanda in a basketball game, and see if I could help them over the top against the mighty Cape Verde.

We spent most of August 2023 in Rwanda. We knew just a little about the awful events of the 1990s but travelled with no preconceptions and no idea as to what we would find.

And what we found was extraordinary. A beautiful country, full of wonderful people, exhilarating things to do, gorgeous scenery and a recent history that is an education for us all.

Since 2000, this fragile and ruined country has been gradually re-shaped into a single community, with days each month set aside for communal activities. Clinics and schools provide health and education, food and shelter reaches everyone. Corruption is virtually eradicated and public administration is astonishingly fast and efficient; the country is spotlessly clean and sustainability and conservation are taken seriously.

President Paul Kagame's genius, discipline and determination has achieved what seemed impossible little more than two decades ago. With a philosophy that demanded policies focus “on the future not that past”, he masterminded the most extraordinary reconciliation process in history

It is now a vibrant country, full of hope, ambition, aspiration and energy. The people remain quietly spoken and reserved – some conversations can still be difficult – but the young show less caution and are fun and engaging.

Our dirty, self-obsessed, throw-away culture looks disgusting from a pristine Rwandan roadside. We have so much to learn from this small gem in the heart of Africa.

During the Rwanda tourism week 2022, Rwanda has struck strategic partnerships and linkages across the African continent to create exponential economic gains across the involved parties. With key government entities and private sector institutions joining hands, it is no doubt that the tourism economic recovery, post-pandemic is now standing at 85 per cent.

Africa’s cleanest and safest country blew my expectations out of the water!

There’s nothing better than having your expectations blown away by a city, especially when its media coverage hasn’t always been great. From what I saw and experienced, there’s a lot more the country has to offer. It shows what a country can do over time and with the right leadership. It’s no wonder The NBA's BAL (Basketball Africa League) chose to launch its billion-dollar league in Rwanda. Rwanda is home to a booming infrastructure a rapidly growing city, a fantastic culture, and one of the lowest corruption indexes in the world. On top of all of this, It has stunning landscapes and beautiful nature that’ll blow your mind.
