As COVID-19 cases spike in Europe, Africa and the Americas with “multiple factors driving transmission risk,” WHO’s Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “we are collectively not succeeding at breaking the chains of transmission at the community level or within households. We need to close the gap between intent and implementation at the country and individual level because at present there is immense pressure on hospitals and health workers."

Speaking to reporters in Geneva today (15 Jan), Dr Tedros said, "the more the virus is suppressed, the less opportunity it has to mutate. We need to be more efficient than the virus and reach excellence in everything we do.”

The WHO chief reiterated, “there is only one way out of this storm and that is to share the tools we have and commit to use them together."

Dr Tedros also said, "this is a defining moment in the pandemic and I was pleased that the Emergency Committee put a major emphasis on rolling out COVID-19 vaccines equitably.”

He continued, “health workers are exhausted, health systems are stretched and we’re seeing supplies of oxygen run dangerously low in some countries,” reiterating that “now is the time we must pull together as common humanity and rollout vaccines to health workers and those at highest risk."

WHO’s Dr Mariângela Simão also briefed the reporters. She said, “the world we live in is not a fair world. Right? And I'm saying this because the Covax Facility is a way for us to reach fairness. And we are going to get there, and we have worked like Dr. Soumya was saying, there are vaccines that are friendlier to the low- and middle-income countries' environment, to the logistics that are needed to ensure coverage and to ensure that the countries can actually use the vaccine to the priority populations and so on.”

She continued, “these vaccines are on the way so what we have is a gap in time, when we have the some... Now I think it's 46 countries have started vaccinations and out of this, I think 38 are high-income countries.”

Dr Mariângela Simão added, “Covax Facility is there to ensure we can correct the course and make sure that all countries have access to safe and effective vaccines. This is not happening now in January, but it's happening quite soon and we hope to have good news for you on this in February this year.”

Senior Advisor to the Director-General and Head of the ACT-Accelerator Coordination Hub Dr Bruce Aylward told reporters, “we have three lines of defense, but we have to use them all.”

He explained, “the first line of defense we're starting to roll out is the vaccine that can protect people from getting infected. And then we have diagnostics and we have new rapid diagnostics that work well. They give a second line of defense so you can find the ones who get infected, you can rapidly isolate, rapidly quarantine. And then we have the third line of defense for those people who are infected and get sick, we have dexamethazone, oxygen as Maria lays out all the time. Very, very good clinical pathways, and you can save lives if all of that is applied. But no one part of this works, you have to use all three lines of defense.”

Chair of the Emergency Committee Prof Didier Houssin said, "we (the world) are a little bit paralyzed, we are a little bit confused. And clearly the question of travel inside the world, around the world by air, by road, by sea needs to be better perhaps possible and organized.”

He continued, “this is why one of the recommendations of the Committee to WHO was to take a strong lead in order to produce a clear guidance and scientifically based guidance about how best to facilitate and permit the circulation of people in a safe manner."

Professor Nadje Al Ali's Inaugural Lecture entitled "On Not Travelling Lightly: Transnational feminist journeys to and from the Middle East" was given on 18 May 2011 at SOAS, University of London.

What does "gender studies" mean in the context of research in and on the Middle East? What baggage do we carry when engaging in transnational feminist solidarity with women' s rights activists in the region? The lecture will reflect on the relevance of gender as an analytical category and as a political concept. Focusing on her work in relation to the Middle East, particularly Egypt and Iraq, Professor Al-Ali will explore the interconnections as well as tensions between academic and activist trajectories.

Professor Nadje Al-Ali is Chair of the SOAS Centre for Gender Studies. She has published widely on women and gender in the Middle East, particularly Egypt and Iraq. Nadje is currently President of the Association of Middle East Women's Studies (AMEWS). She is also a member of the Feminist Review Collective and a founding member of Act Together: Women's Action for Iraq. (www.acttogether.org)

YEMEN
At the start of today’s Yemen Pledging Conference, the Secretary-General said that more than five years of conflict have left Yemenis hanging on by a thread, their economy in tatters, their institutions facing near-collapse. He also said that four people out of every five – or 24 million people in all – need lifesaving aid in what remains the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
We are in a race against time, the Secretary-General warned, as reports indicate that, in Aden, mortality rates from COVID-19 are among the highest in the world. He added that we must preserve the major humanitarian aid operation that is already underway – and the world’s largest – while developing new public health programmes to fight the virus and strengthen healthcare systems.
The Secretary-General said that aid agencies estimate they will need up to $2.41 billion to cover essential aid from June until December, and that includes programmes to counter COVID-19. Unless we secure significant funding, he added, more than 30 out of 41 major United Nations programmes in Yemen will close in the next few weeks.
Mark Lowcock, our humanitarian chief, told the pledging conference that COVID-19 rapid response teams are funded only until the end of June. Next month, he said, we could start winding down treatment for severely malnourished children. Support for cholera facilities will also start to reduce. Mr. Lowcock added that pledges will not save lives unless they are paid, and so far, most of the pledges made remain unpaid.

FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT
Today, the Financing for Development Forum’s second meeting brought together representatives from banks, funds and financial institutions to mobilize $1.2 trillion dollars in humanitarian and economic relief to developing countries reeling under the impact of the pandemic.
The Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, said it is important to find multilateral solutions to address the underlying fragilities that were exposed by the pandemic. She stressed that the UN’s focus is on developing countries.
Also participating in the meeting were the IMF, the World Bank and the African Development Bank, which are mobilizing $1 trillion – $175 billion and $13 billion respectively in COVID-19 relief. The multi-billion dollar Green Climate Fund, which has already suspended debt repayments for the next six months, is also being represented.

10. Tiger Beach, Bahamas
Tiger Beach in the Bahamas is an idyllic place, but don't expect to find big cats there. Instead, the shallow sand flat an hour from the West Grand Bahama Island, is home to a large number of Tiger Sharks. Ranked among the top 10 most shark infested beaches in the world, Tiger Beach is the most popular of several diving sites in Grand Bahama.

9. South Africa's Shark Alley
The highest concentration of great-white sharks in the world is in an area known as Shark Alley. It is one of the top commercial shark cage diving destinations located off the coast of a small town called Gansbaai, at the southeast coast of South Africa. Home to over 50,000 cape fur seals, the channel attracts thousands of great white sharks to hunt the animals.

8. Isla Mujeres
An amazing phenomenon happens every summer at the northeast of Isla Mujeres 13 km off the coast of Cancún, where the largest known gathering of whale sharks takes place. A great event that any visitor wouldn’t want to miss!! Whale sharks are the biggest sharks in the world, measuring up to 60 feet (18 meters) long.

7. Sevengill Sharks
In 2017, Great-white sharks started disappearing off the coast of South Africa, and researches were understandably concerned. At the same time, they noticed that when the great-whites began to vanish from the area, another species of shark, the Sevengill, began to show up for the first time. Since then, the numbers have continued to increase.

6. New Smyrna Beach
Known as the shark-attack capital of the world, Florida reported in 2019 one third of all shark attacks in the whole world. It is estimated that anyone
who has swum in the waters off Florida has at some point been within 10
feet of a shark.

5. New South Wales
What is it that makes the waters of New South Wales such a breeding ground for dangerous sharks?
Researchers believe that these opportunistic scavengers feed on dying or dead animals. Because surfers in wetsuits paddling on boards can be mistaken for sick or dead prey, curious sharks often give an exploratory bite to assess whether what they are seeing is actually food that they want to consume.

4. Lake Sharks
120 miles from the Caribbean Sea, Lake Cocibolca (known as Lake Nicaragua) is patrolled by a wide-ranging species of shark. Locals have been telling stories for years about dangerous, terrifying sharks that would even upset boats in the lake. A tour operator named Mariano Roblero said that you could see a dozen sharks in an hour.

3. Reunion Island
Just south of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, Reunion Island is a popular location for surfers and scuba divers. However, the last four years have seen the idyllic paradise get a reputation for being one of the shark capitals of the world.

2. Bondi Beach
It makes sense that large, unspoiled beaches would be a breeding ground for sharks around the world. One of the most infamous is Australia's busiest beach, Bondi. While it is a sun, sand and surf-lovers utopia, the zone is not shark free. After all, it is Australia!!

1. California’s Red Triangle
I know you’ve heard of the Bermuda Triangle, but you should actually be much more terrified of the Red Triangle in California. This is the easiest place to get attacked by a great white shark in the US. Beginning around Bodega Bay and extending 50 miles west of San Francisco, the triangle, which encompasses 200 miles of coastline, is home to 30% of all great white shark attacks.
