In this episode of Counting the Cost, we look back at the year 2019: people from Latin America to the Middle East took to the street to protest the unequal spread of wealth and demand that governments end austerity; a trade war between the United States and China has put the breaks on global growth and is reshaping globalisation.

But the biggest story of the year 2019 has to be climate change and the lack of will to do anything about it.

Climate crisis: With the exception of the European Union, there is very little effort to reduce emissions. The cost of our inaction has been put at $2bn a day. The United Nations says that $48 trillion needs to be spent by 2050 to avoid catastrophe to humanity; that means putting survival before short term profits.

Teresa Bo reports from Brazil on the threat of deforestation, the Amazon crisis and President Jair Bolsonaro's environmental policies.

Raheela Mahomed reports from East Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the environmental cost of moving the capital from sinking Jakarta to Borneo.

Lucia Newman reports from Santiago on the continuing protests in Chile and how the economic and social crisis has spiralled into a political one.

US-China trade war: The idea of globalisation has come under attack - from President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India", while the trade war between the US and China has taken a few points off global growth. The biggest losers have been exporting nations like Germany and Japan.

Scott Heidler looks at some of the benefits from Bangkok. And Tanvir Chowdhury reports from Tongi, Bangladesh on the rise of steel prices thanks to the US trade war.

Africa Continental Free Trade Area: In May 2019, a new economic bloc was born: 54 nations came together to form the Africa Continental Free Trade Area. The aim of the bloc is to increase trade between nations by tearing down trade barriers - in the hope of becoming the next European Union. Ahmed Idriss reports from the Nigeria-Benin border.

Healthcare in the US: Who should be responsible for providing healthcare? The state or for-profit organisations?

Shihab Rattansi reports from the US on how the health insurance industry is failing patients.

The #AfCFTA Start of Trading Ceremony Webinar (Good Quality)

As Europe goes through lockdown changes, Africa initiates "Black Group Economics "

***Ghana President Says Goodbye to Needing the West After Launch of Africa's Free Trade Area

Experts view the New Year's Day launch as largely symbolic. The African Continental Free Trade Area aims to bring together one-point-three-billion people in a more than 40-trillion-rand economic bloc. The out going AU Chair - President Cyril Ramaphosa has commended Africa for making history, while the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Amina Mohammed says the Free Trade Area presents enormous possibilities for a more resilient and prosperous Africa.

- Central African Republic
- Yemen

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
A report released today by the World Health Organization and its partners says violence against women remains pervasive and starts when women are alarmingly young. Across their lifetime, one in three women, that’s around 736 million, are subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner or sexual violence from a non-partner. That’s a number that has remained largely unchanged over the past decade. One in four young women who have been in a relationship will have already experienced violence by the time they reach their mid-twenties.
The report is based on data from 2000 to 2018 and does not reflect the ongoing impact of the pandemic. WHO and its partners warned that COVID-19 has triggered a “shadow pandemic” of increased women’s exposure to violence, as a result of measures such as lockdowns and disruptions to vital support services.
The report also found that the regions of Oceania, Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa have the highest prevalence rates of intimate partner violence among women who are between the ages of 15 and 49. The lowest rates are found in Europe, Central Asia, Eastern Asia, and South-East Asia.

CENTRAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE FUND
This month marks the 15th anniversary of the launch of the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund.
The Fund has allowed humanitarian organizations to kick-start urgent aid operations worldwide within hours of a natural disaster. With it, the UN is able to reach people in crises not receiving the attention and funding they deserve. The fund is a cornerstone in the response to global crises and in standing with people at their time of greatest needs.
In 2020, the Fund helped bring food assistance to over seven million people. It also ensured that 5.5 million women and girls were protected in natural disasters among many other crises.
Since 2006, CERF has allocated $7 billion helping millions of people in 100 countries get critical life-saving assistance.
The UN thanks all the donors and Member States who have generously contributed funding to the Central Emergency Response Fund over the years, as well as the partners who have worked together to deliver humanitarian relief and protection.

SECURITY COUNCIL/SUDAN
The Security Council met virtually on the new UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, otherwise known as UNITAMS.
In his first briefing to the Council, the head of the mission, Volker Perthes, said the political transition process in Sudan is moving forward.
He stressed that an inclusive political process, including all segments of Sudan’s diverse society, is essential for its success.
Mr. Perthes said that the protection of civilians remains one of the mission’s main priorities, with 165 people killed and more than 100,000 people displaced in intercommunal clashes in West Darfur in January.
He said the UN is working to support the new Government to strengthen the protection of civilians.

MYANMAR
The Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener is continuing her diplomacy. She is in contact with countries in the region, including Myanmar’s direct neighbors. Discussions about her potential travel to the region continue.

Noon briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General.

Highlights:
-Secretary-General/Climate Change
-Secretary General/Paris Peace Forum
-Ethiopia
-Yemen
-Afghanistan
-Guinea
-Belarus-Poland Border
-Covax Update
-FAO/Food Outlook
-UN Refugee Agency Mid-Year Trends Report

SECRETARY-GENERAL/CLIMATE CHANGE
This morning, the Secretary-General spoke at the Global Climate Action High-Level Event at the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in in Glasgow.
He said the announcements made in Scotland are encouraging – but they are far from enough.
He underscored that the emissions gap remains a devastating threat and the finance and adaptation gap represent a glaring injustice for the developing world.
He called for more ambitious future revised Nationally Determined Contributions and for implementation of the countries’ pledges.
He also said that he was inspired by the mobilization of civil society, the moral voice of young people and the dynamism and example of indigenous communities.
Governments need to pick up the pace and show the necessary ambition on mitigation, adaptation and finance in a balanced way. He said we cannot settle for the lowest common denominator.
He also met with more leaders on the sidelines of COP, including Frans Timmermans, the Vice-President of the European Commission; a group of mayors; and ministers from Russia and China.

SECRETARY-GENERAL/PARIS PEACE FORUM
The Secretary-General is also about to speak, via pre-recorded video message, to the Paris Peace Forum.
He will say at a time when fractures are greatly threatening the world, he will encourage leaders to engage in dialogue and conflict prevention. He will also call for greater solidarity as the only way to heal the great fractures of this world.

ETHIOPIA
On the situation in northern Ethiopia: Our humanitarian colleagues say that people in Amhara need shelter, food, and water, as well as medicines and protection, as fighting in Amhara has led to many people being newly displaced from Dessie, Kombolcha, Baati, Kamissie and other areas in Amhara.
Tens of thousands of internally displaced people have reportedly registered in the city of Debre Berhan, with many people taking shelter in two schools there.
Thousands of people are also reportedly displaced from Chifra and Ada’ar in Afar as well. The majority of these people are women and children, once again.
As you know, the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid has been hampered by lack of access due to insecurity. Electricity and telecommunications have also been cut in Dessie and Kombolcha in Amhara province since October 30th. In Amhara, some 915,000 people have received food assistance and nearly 160,000 people have received shelter and other items since August.
No UN-organized humanitarian supplies have arrived in Tigray through the Semera-Abala-Mekelle route since October 18th. In Semera, 364 trucks are on hold, pending authorization from the authorities to proceed.
The continuing fuel and cash shortage is significantly affecting our partners’ ability to transport supplies, including food. The lack of essential medical equipment, supplies, and vaccines across the whole of Tigray is also seriously impacting the availability of health care.
Humanitarian partners remain in Tigray and aim to deliver assistance with available resources.
Between October 28th and November 3rd, some 112,000 people received food in Tigray, which is well below the average of 870,000 people who should be assisted each week.
Throughout the country, humanitarian operations face a funding gap of $1.3 billion, including $350 million for the response in Tigray alone.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of a brutal conflict that France only officially recognised as being a war in 1999. Between 1954 and 1962, swords were locked between France and Algeria, with nationalists in the North African country determined to push the colonisers out. In March 1962, along the shores of Lake Geneva, a peace deal was finally reached between ministers and a delegation from Algeria's provisional government. The Evian Accords would eventually result in Algeria's independence, ending 132 years of French rule.
