Serengeti National Park Tanzania - An episode of series: Top 10 Destinations in Africa for a First-Time Visitor.
Tanzania is home to another iconic African destination: the Serengeti. Located in the far north of the country, it shares unfenced borders with Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. Together the two parks host one of nature’s most extraordinary events, the annual Great Migration of several million wildebeest, zebra, and other antelope. For the best chance of seeing the herds on the move, head to the Serengeti from December to July, making sure to check which area of the 5,700-square-mile park is currently seeing action. .
Even if you don’t catch the migration, the Serengeti is a remarkable safari destination. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its ecological importance, it boats the highest concentration of plains game in Africa. The Netherlands Embassy in Partnership with Nabaki Africa and UP Studio Africa hosted an online event to explore innovative and climate-smart ways of designing Tanzania's safari lodge of the future. During the event, several private stakeholders showcased ways with new designs, materials, and marketing tools to a sustainable and eco-friendly Tanzanian tourism sector. Throughout the event, also the Tanzanian designers of the future, between the ages of 6 and 15, exhibited their ideas of Tanzania's future safari lodge.

FBW presented their work highlighting 3 key objectives in design that can promote sustainable tourism, by:

1. preserving, enhancing and showcasing cultural and natural heritage
2. exploring and refining aesthetics of modern climate responsive designs
3. using a community inclusive approach

Also called a stratovolcano (a term for a very large volcano made of ash, lava, and rock), Kilimanjaro is made up of three cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the summit of the mountain and the tallest of the three volcanic formations. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo is dormant and could possibly erupt again. Scientists estimate that the last time it erupted was 360,000 years ago. The highest point on Kibo’s crater rim is called Uhuru, the Swahili word for “freedom.” The mountain is also known for its snow-capped peak; however, scientists warn that the snow might disappear within the next 20 years or so.

The trek begins at Machame Gate, located in the southern base of mountain, which is just a short drive from Moshi or Arusha.

The hike starts within Kilimanjaro’s lush, fertile, montane rainforest. As you might expect, the lower slopes receive quite a bit of precipitation. The trail may be steep and slippery, so trekking poles are advised. As the route heads toward the Shira Plateau, the trees disappear and are replaced by low brush in the heather zone.

Then, the route climbs high to the volcanic plug, Lava Tower, before dropping and circling below the South Icefield. This circular pathway from Barranco to Karanga to Barafu is known as the southern circuit. As it traverses halfway around the mountain, climbers are exposed to great vistas.

The long, strenuous approach to the summit is made from the east through endless switchbacks up increasingly loose gravel until we reach the crater rim at a mark known as Stella Point. Then the route is relatively flat for another hour to Uhuru Peak – the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The quick descent follows the Mweka trail.
