Kilwa Ruins Lodge is the premiere lodge in the Kilwa region. This stunning seaside resort found a very special place in our hearts. The array of activites at this family oriented destination spoiled us for choice and the charm and grace of our hosts and staff left us with a warm sense of belonging. We were presented with a selection of air conditioned accommodation ranging from 6 bed luxury chalets right on the beach, to 2 bed bandas overlooking the ocean. Any inkling one has towards sport fishing would be more than indulged at Kilwa Ruins lodge and the other activities on offer, such as cruising the mangrove lined waterways in search of hippo and crocodile, or snorkeling in idyllic conditions at the sandbanks, ensures that one departs the lodge with a strong yearning to return. The World heritage site of the Kilwa Ruins is a humbling experience not to be missed. The harbour town of Kilwa Kisiwani was once the hub of East African trade encompassing slaves, gold and spices.

Kearsleys Travel and Tours

Kearsleys, as it is more avidly known today, was established in 1948 with a vision to serve the foreign expatriates working in Tanganyika (Tanzania before independence) with a reliable and efficient travel and tourism services to meet their needs. Originally it was a fully owned subsidiary of J.W Kearsley (UK) Ltd., owned by Cory Brothers Ltd. and a member of Powell Duffryn Group. It changed hands in 1974, when it was sold to N.V. Patel & Brothers Ltd., a locally owned holding company with a wide interest in agriculture and agro- chemical industries, air and sea transportation and general trading. Since that date the management of the company has been passed to the local board of directors consisting entirely of Tanzanians who have admirably steered the company forward and developed it into a market leader in spite of the economic challenges it faced over the years.
Kearsleys at this juncture is the oldest operating tours and travel company in Tanzania and taking this legacy into consideration, we celebrated its 50th anniversary on 02nd December 1998 with jubilation and euphoria as it earmarked a significant milestone in our history of dedicated and matchless service to the people, general air transportation and tourism sectors in Tanzania. Today, as we're now over 60 years into our operation, we are proud to say that Kearsleys has played a pivotal and a leading role in the development of air travel and tourism in Tanzania and has built an unrivalled reputation both locally and internationally serving its clients and the travelling public at large with unparalleled and reliable service levels.
With this strong historical past, the future looks promising and we at Kearsleys are very confident that our legacy will live on for years to come.

Located in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s tallest mountain at about 5,895 meters (19,340 feet). It is the largest free-standing mountain rise in the world, meaning it is not part of a mountain range.

Also called a stratovolcano (a term for a very large volcano made of ash, lava, and rock), Kilimanjaro is made up of three cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the summit of the mountain and the tallest of the three volcanic formations. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo is dormant and could possibly erupt again. Scientists estimate that the last time it erupted was 360,000 years ago. The highest point on Kibo’s crater rim is called Uhuru, the Swahili word for “freedom.” The mountain is also known for its snow-capped peak; however, scientists warn that the snow might disappear within the next 20 years or so.

The trek begins at Machame Gate, located in the southern base of mountain, which is just a short drive from Moshi or Arusha.

The hike starts within Kilimanjaro’s lush, fertile, montane rainforest. As you might expect, the lower slopes receive quite a bit of precipitation. The trail may be steep and slippery, so trekking poles are advised. As the route heads toward the Shira Plateau, the trees disappear and are replaced by low brush in the heather zone.

Then, the route climbs high to the volcanic plug, Lava Tower, before dropping and circling below the South Icefield. This circular pathway from Barranco to Karanga to Barafu is known as the southern circuit. As it traverses halfway around the mountain, climbers are exposed to great vistas.

The long, strenuous approach to the summit is made from the east through endless switchbacks up increasingly loose gravel until we reach the crater rim at a mark known as Stella Point. Then the route is relatively flat for another hour to Uhuru Peak – the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The quick descent follows the Mweka trail.
