Vacation travel video about destination Cabo Verde.
Cabo Verde is a tropical archipelago situated off the coast of Africa with rugged mountains, green valleys and arid deserts, an exotic island paradise set amid the Atlantic. In the north east of the islands is Sal, an island of both wind and sunshine and a strange and exciting world with a volcanic lunar landscape. On the other side of the island, Palmeira, otherwise known as Pedra Lume, is Sal’s most important port from which the whole of the island’s maritime trade is handled. Santiago lies in the south and is the largest island in the achipelago and is where the Portuguese, as the first settlers, set up a military station. The family genes and traditions of two continents have produced a population with various characteristics of both culture and lifestyle. The islands offer many kinds of fresh food as well as products from around the world. São Vicente is a centre of culture and its colourful mansions are reminiscent of the heyday of the original city. Explorer Diego Alfonso would not have dreamed that one day the port would become a large maritime coal storage depot indeed, the first overseas telephone cable was laid through it. Great explorers once sailed in this region where fishing and salt defined the islanders’ lives. All around, volcanic mountains, desert landscapes and tropical valleys. Each island is unique and each has its own special charm. Cabo Verde – dreamy islands of Light and Beauty!

For Edson, as for every Cabo Verdean, the pandemic was a real blow - not just economically, but also psychologically. During lockdown, he was laid off and struggled to make a living as a musician and as a guide. Everyone was isolated and there was no opportunity to meet with friends and family or play music. “Vaccines were the hope. They were the only solution to get back to a normal life,” Edson said. Today, his aim is to make people discover the native culture of hospitality and caring for people, also called the spirit of “morabeza” in Creole. An archipelago known as a dream destination, Cape Verde is formed of ten islands. This small island state is located off the coast of West Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean. Discovered in the 1450s, Cape Verde held many mysteries! Since then, this country is populated and has developed a culture that is waiting to be discovered.

As soon as the islands were discovered by the Portuguese navigators, they served as an important trading place. Indeed, Cape Verde was a land where slaves circulated and were picked up by boat. It was
also a place to get supplies, when the sailors needed to make a stopover, for example. Moreover, the archipelago offered important resources at the time, such as coal. Finally, the last center of interest for Cape Verde, at the time, was the maritime fauna. Whaling was a widespread and often practiced activity around Cape Verde, which represented an economic advantage in the past. The country was thus marked by exploitation and lost this dynamic from the 19th century, when slavery was abolished. Despite this, the archipelago remained under the control of the Portuguese nation until 1975, when it gained independence after decolonization.

Of all the islands of the archipelago, Santiago is the one with the largest surface and the largest population. Conversely, the most populated island in the country is Santiago, which we will discuss in the second fact. If we are really interested in the civilian population of Cape Verde, it is necessary to know that this country is inhabited by 555,000 inhabitants. Among all this population, which is moreover varied between ethnic groups of Africa and Europe, 274 000 populate Santiago! This represents almost half of the population concentrated in one island! After all, the island of Santiago has an area of 991 square kilometers. That's where the capital, the city of Praia, is located. This place is a capital worthy of the name, since it meets all possible needs! It is both the port for ferry boats arriving on the island, as well as the country's international airport!

When talking about Cape Verde, it is imperative to talk about its natural heritage, and more specifically its geology. These islands contain pearls of nature! For example, the Pico do Fogo is the highest peak of Cape Verde, and culminates at 2 829 meters of altitude. This peak is a stratovolcano, which means that it is a volcano formed from several layers of dried lava, stones and ashes. As its name indicates, it is located on the island of Fogo. Its activity began about 20 million years ago, and it is still active today! Its last eruption was from November 2014 to February 2015. During these 77 consecutive days, it was more than a hundred million tons of lava that flowed, destroying two villages. Other geological events are remarkable in Cape Verde. One thinks in particular of the crater named Pedra de Lume, which measures approximately 1.8 kilometers in diameter! This last one bears its name badly, because it is not a crater, but an extinct volcano. And since it is located near the coast, the water ended up sleeping in and forming salt ponds.

Travel video about destination Cida Velha in The Cape Verde Islands.
The Cape Verde Islands are set within the Atlantic Ocean with an impressive landscape and diverse culture. It was not until 1445 that the fifteen islands of the region were discovered and subsequently became a Portuguese colony. Only nine of the Cabo Verde islands are inhabited and Cidade Velha is where Cabo Verde’s history began. The Nossa Senhora Do Rosario Church is more than five hundred years old and its tiny cemetery provides shelter for the graves of the first Portuguese who landed in the region. Its church bell and richly decorated altar were pillaged by Sir Francis Drake and shipped to England. The tiny buildings of Rua De Banana were reconstructed true to the original, with the help of UNESCO. Low, elongated stone houses covered with straw, line the narrow road that leads up the valley, upstream from the sea. In 1585 the royal pirate attacked with twenty five ships and more than a thousand men. Thus, major defences were subsequently built and from that time, Cidade Velha prepared for any possible future hostilities, a fact of which pirates soon became well aware and thus avoided the island. However, when the slave trade was made illegal and a severe drought hit the region, the heyday of the first capital of Cabo Verde came to a close.

Big apologies for missing our Monday download but internet and events conspire. All good as we have really cool visuals of this magical island and its magnificent coastline. A sneak preview of some of the waves.. more on that later. Have met such cool people in Sal Rei. I'm trying to show this amazing island and not give away too many of her surf secrets. Surf hunting without a bit of a slog ain't authentic so a little tease is mandatory.
If you are lucky enough to visit here don't hesitate to contact Sean Guy at the Boa Vista Wind Club for all your water sport needs. Sean is your Guy if you need kite, surf, foil or any other water sport tuition.

If you want to tour the island contact Bobs at :

These guys are exceptional and will show you their island with passion and heart!! We were just so lucky to meet these guys through reference of friends and good luck. This island has been decimated by covid and these gentlemen will give you the shirt off their backs regardless of their predicament....enough said!!
This place is without doubt our favourite island and is so worth a visit if not just to meet these wonderful people..

Francisco Martins, Executive Director of Cabo Verde Tourism Board at World Travel Market London 2023

Cabo Verde, also known as Cape Verde, is an archipelago located off the northwest coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Comprising ten main islands and several islets, Cabo Verde is known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from volcanic peaks to sandy beaches. The capital city, Praia, is situated on the largest island, Santiago.

Cabo Verde gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and has since developed a unique cultural blend influenced by African, European, and Creole traditions. The official language is Portuguese, but Cape Verdean Creole is widely spoken.

The archipelago's economy relies on tourism, remittances, and services. Visitors are drawn to Cabo Verde for its vibrant music, including the popular genres of morna and coladeira, as well as its rich history and warm hospitality. The nation faces challenges related to water scarcity and economic development, but it has made progress in recent years, and its natural beauty and cultural richness continue to make it a captivating destination.

"Cabo Verde has been dealing with the UK market for a long time. We basically have our client comes to Sunny Beach, but actually we have now diversified the product for other segments like water sport and ecotourism, and any cultural events we can have on the calendar to make people interested in what Cabo Verde will be promoting the next couple of years to come. The connection is really good in the perspective of two year operating. But now we want to have our care, our company, to fly from London to Cabo Verde maybe the beginning of next year. We try to have the operation put on the place this year, but at least we know next year, the first semester will be flights from London to Sal Island and maybe Brava as well. Cabo Verde is a place to live when the winter is high in Europe and you have to find a warm country with the beautiful people willing to have you as a guest. And then it's as far we know, it's the finest nature for having peace and tranquility as you need to rest and have a new experiences outside Europe."
