In this video Heimler reviews Unit 2 of the AP World History curriculum. The main bulk of the review consists of comparing the three major trade routes during the period 1200-1450: the Silk Roads, the Indian Ocean Routes, and the Trans-Saharan Trade Routes.

Each of the major trade routes had much in common. They connected distant societies by trade and had significant secondary consequences. In addition to merchants carrying goods for sale, they also carried important cultural, environmental, and technological goods that they introduced to the various cultures in which they found themselves.

Some major technologies that arose to facilitate trade are as follows: the saddle, the lateen sail, the sternpost rudder, the magnetic compass, and the astrolabe.

Additionally, because large states kept the trade routes relatively safe, travelers like Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo helped expand people’s imaginations for lands far beyond their own.

And, of course, we have a look at the most significant pastoral people ever to take the stage of world history: the Mongols. They were largely responsible for the security of the major trading routes and, on the negative side, the spread of the Black Death.

Climate-resilient infrastructure systems: adapting to extreme weather events in urban MENA - Nature-based solutions to enable sustainable travel amidst everyday environment and extreme weather events

This event aims to raise awareness about everyday challenges at the local level with heatwaves and other extreme weather events like flooding occurring in MENA cities today; identify and showcase the need for physical climate-risk assessments embedded into the planning and design of built assets; discuss how urban infrastructure and transport systems can be designed to be resilient and adapt to extreme weather events and disasters such as through the nexus of the Sharm El Sheikh Adaptation Agenda and Nature Positive Development and other initiatives; showcase solutions in advancing sustainable infrastructure and materials to support urban and transport transitions in the MENA region; showcase real-world, concrete solutions being taken forward on the ground, especially cooling systems (e.g. Cool Up) and energy demand management; how to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events on transport systems using technology, best practices and Nature-Based Solutions; how to leverage the ecological benefits of nature-based solutions to improve the well-being of urban commuters; and how subnational governments can contribute and support national governments in implementing national policies for an inclusive nature-positive agenda.

Germany is one of the world’s richest countries, but inequality is on the rise. The wealthy are pulling ahead, while the poor are falling behind.

For the middle classes, work is no longer a means of advancement. Instead, they are struggling to maintain their position and status. Young people today have less disposable income than previous generations. This documentary explores the question of inequality in Germany, providing both background analysis and statistics. The filmmakers interview leading researchers and experts on the topic. And they accompany Christoph Gröner, one of Germany’s biggest real estate developers, as he goes about his work. "If you have great wealth, you can’t fritter it away through consumption. If you throw money out the window, it comes back in through the front door,” Gröner says. The real estate developer builds multi-family residential units in cities across Germany, sells condominium apartments, and is involved in planning projects that span entire districts. "Entrepreneurs are more powerful than politicians, because we’re more independent,” Gröner concludes. Leading researchers and experts on the topic of inequality also weigh in, including Nobel-prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, economist Thomas Piketty, and Brooke Harrington, who carried out extensive field research among investors from the ranks of the international financial elite. Branko Milanović, a former lead economist at the World Bank, says that globalization is playing a role in rising inequality. The losers of globalization are the lower-middle class of affluent countries like Germany. "These people are earning the same today as 20 years ago," Milanović notes. "Just like a century ago, humankind is standing at a crossroads. Will affluent countries allow rising equality to tear apart the fabric of society? Or will they resist this trend?”

Many people who love space and rockets have been trying to guess what these changes might mean for the Starship. Most agree that a Starship with nine engines, designed for longer space trips, would need bigger fuel tanks. They might need to increase the size of these tanks by around 25% to hold an extra 300 tons of fuel. This is a lot more fuel, almost like adding the fuel from multiple large airplanes to the Starship.The updated Starship, with an expected weight of nearly 1,600 tons and standing about 55 meters tall, is indeed a marvel. This height is almost comparable to two large airplanes stacked on top of each other. It surpasses its current design by about 10%, edging closer in power and size to the Falcon Heavy, currently known as the world's most potent reusable rocket.Now, when we compare it to the Space Launch System or SLS, which is currently the largest active rocket, the distinctions become evident. While the SLS is a beast in its own right, designed to be the primary launch vehicle of NASA's deep space exploration plans, the Starship is gearing up to challenge and possibly exceed its capabilities.In terms of payload capacity, the Starship's potential to carry up to 220 tons, or even more, stands out. This capacity is akin to transporting a large passenger airplane into space. When compared to the SLS's expected payload capacity, Starship outshines, especially considering its capability for more extended missions without frequent refueling. The ability to conduct more extended missions can significantly impact trips to destinations like the moon or Mars, making the exploration more efficient and economical.Beyond these technical specifications, it's essential to highlight the broader implications. If Starship successfully goes through all its prototype tests and becomes operational, it won't just be another rocket. It will be the largest rocket ever built, signaling a new era in space exploration and technology. Aspirations, while pushing us to achieve great things, often come with their own set of challenges and hurdles. The journey of SpaceX's Starship perfectly illustrates this, as the ambitious project has faced a series of regulatory roadblocks that have slowed down its progress.Many still recall how, just a month ago, SpaceX faced a setback. The scene at the launchpad was filled with anticipation, only to be met with disappointment: SpaceX had to take apart the rocket because the Federal Aviation Administration didn't provide the needed launch permissions. The FAA's stance was clear; certain safety measures and steps were yet to be completed, leaving fans and experts both excited and let down.

Co-founder of the NGO Malevich Institute. Teyana is the author of some of the leading books about “Kazimir Malevich”, especially focusing on his ‘Kyiv period 1928-1930’, and she has sought to reverse the cultural appropriation that leads him to be labelled as a Russian artis and reclaim his Ukrainian provenance and identity. Tetyana teaches at the Ukrainian Catholic University, and the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine.

Fraudsters in Ghana show us how they use internet scams to steal thousands of dollars from unsuspecting victims all over the globe.

While Nigeria's 401 scammers may have written the book on West African internet fraud, their shtick looks like Compuserve compared to what's going on in Ghana. Unsatisfied with the meager winnings from emailing thousands of random Westerners in hopes of convincing one poor sap they're the treasurer of the Ivory Coast, Ghana's scammers decided to stack the odds in their favor the old-fashioned way—witchcraft.

Taking a page from cyberpunk, traditional West African Juju priests adapted their services to the needs of the information age and started leading down-on-their-luck internet scammers through strange and costly rituals designed to increase their powers of persuasion and make their emails irresistible to greedy Americans. And so "Sakawa" was born.

Now not only is Sakawa Ghana's most popular youth activity and one of its biggest underground economies, it's a full-blown national phenomenon. Sakawa has its own tunes, clothing brands, Sakawasploitation flicks, and even a metastatic backlash from Christian preachers and the press. When we were in Accra over the summer it was impossible to walk more than 10 feet without seeing the word Sakawa in blood-red Misfits letters on a poster or tabloid, often accompanied by bone-chilling horrors of the photoshopped variety.

The government is freaked out because Sakawa is threatening Ghana's business reputation, the Christians are freaked out because they're losing money to the Juju priests, the press is freaked out because being freaked out is what sells papers, and the public is freaked out because their government, preacher, and media are all telling them they should be. All the while the Sakawa boys are living the high life and racking up debts to the spirit world, just waiting for the axe to fall.

John investigates when and where slavery originated, how it changed over the centuries, and how Europeans and colonists in the Americas arrived at the idea that people could own other people based on skin color.

Slavery has existed as long as humans have had civilization, but the Atlantic Slave Trade was the height, or depth, of dehumanizing, brutal, chattel slavery. American slavery ended less than 150 years ago. In some parts of the world, it is still going on. So how do we reconcile that with modern life? In a desperate attempt at comic relief, Boba Fett makes an appearance.
