About the Conference
With Islamophobia becoming a household term over the past decade, it is incumbent on scholars and practitioners to explore the historical origins and global connections of this phenomenon to fully understand and confront its current iterations. Convened by members of the Georgetown University in Qatar faculty, this conference brings together a diverse collection of professionals, academics, government officials, artists, and students to explore the global, historical, theological, and political dimensions that drive practices of Islamophobia. We also aim to provide a public platform for engagement on this important topic and invite you to join the conversation.

U.S. Route 66, also known as the Will Rogers Highway, was one of the original highways constructed by the U.S. Highway System in 1926. Route 66 is over 90 years old and definitely, a road less traveled. There are plenty of weird attractions to be seen along this iconic road that starts in Chicago and ends in Los Angeles. While much of Route 66 has disappeared following its decommissioning as a major American highway in 1985, there remains plenty of evidence to be seen and cherished by historical and pop-cultural lovers. Large chunks of Route 66-related memorabilia have been preserved at the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame and Museum.

For 1.5 million years, African elephants have walked the continent of Africa. Their deep wisdom and the secure attachments that begin the minute a newborn arrives have been passed down through countless generations. Since 1991, Stephen Gianotti has had the privilege to be up close and personal with the African elephant as a student of their wisdom, an admirer of their generosity, and an advocate for their sustainable survival. His talk shares three lessons from the African elephant and three challenging questions that inform and could alter the course of our lives and, quite possibly, humanity.

Stephen Gianotti is the founder and president of The Woodland Group, an organizational development company based in New Hampshire. He also serves as board chair for the Global Society for Organizational Learning, based in Stockholm. With the exception of spending 15 years in the corporate world, where he was fortunate to travel extensively, Stephen has lived in New Hampshire all of his life. Stephen was the official Zoom safari guide for Botswana’s elephant rescue sanctuary, sharing the majesty and the mystery of the African elephant with thousands of people around the world. Africa occupies a very special place in Stephen’s soul. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. When Marcus Samuelsson was working as a chef in France, he was told that he’d never own a restaurant because there weren’t any Black-owned businesses with the ambition that he had. This propelled him to move to America where he had seen Black excellence and was motivated to bring his vision to life. Today that dream resides in Harlem and has become one of New York City’s most famous restaurants.

Born in Ethiopia, he was separated from his parents during the Civil War in 1974 and subsequently adopted by Swedish parents. After spending his entire youth cooking alongside his grandmother, he developed the chops to work in kitchens around the world. Since then he’s been an immigrant six times, but laid his roots in America where he opened 23 restaurants and employed 2,000 people under normal circumstances.

When Covid struck New York City he quickly turned his restaurant into a community kitchen and began donating meals to essential workers and some of the hardest hit communities of color. His efforts kept much of his staff employed and fed over 250,000 people in need.

In which John Green teaches you about the post-World War II breakup of most of the European empires. As you'll remember from previous installments of Crash Course, Europeans spent several centuries sailing around the world creating empires, despite the fact that most of the places they conquered were perfectly happy to carry on alone. After World War II, most of these empires collapsed. This is the story of those collapses. In most places, the end of empire was not orderly, and violence often ensued. While India was a (sort of) shining example of non-violent change, in places like The Congo, Egypt, Rwanda, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, things didn't go smoothly at all.
