In the aftermath of a rare victory against Savimbi's UNITA forces, young rookies show off their victims. "Hey! this guy's still alive," they say "let's riddle him with bullets." But for most the bravado is wearing thin. The government has resorted to cordoning off neighbourhoods and press-ganging boys into service. Angola's provincial cities have become islands of government control. Besieged by UNITA they are the frontlines of the civil war and the end of the line for thousands of refugees. 18,000 of them crowd into Huambo, unable to leave for fear of stepping on a mine or running into UNITA.. "We ran away from UNITA because they decapitate people," explains just one of the refugees now totally dependent on the dwindling aid handouts. People run as the bombs fall in Huambo, yet there seems no urgency to their strides. After so many attacks fatalism pervades. UNITA has made the towns centres of crisis to keep the government busy while they get on with the real war of keeping their diamonds. Government ads promise an end to war. "Angola says Enough!" they trumpet.

Angola (/ænˈɡoʊlə/ ⓘ an-GOH-lə; Portuguese: [ɐ̃ˈɡɔlɐ]; Kongo: Ngola, pronounced [ŋɔla]), officially the Republic of Angola (Portuguese: República de Angola), is a country on the west-central coast of Southern Africa. It is the second-largest Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) country in both total area and population (behind Brazil in both cases), and is the seventh-largest country in Africa. It is bordered by Namibia to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Zambia to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Angola has an exclave province, the province of Cabinda, that borders the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The capital and most populous city is Luanda.

Angola has been inhabited since the Paleolithic Age. Its formation as a nation-state originates from Portuguese colonisation, which initially began with coastal settlements and trading posts founded in the 16th century. In the 19th century, European settlers gradually began to establish themselves in the interior. The Portuguese colony that became Angola did not have its present borders until the early 20th century, owing to resistance by native groups such as the Cuamato, the Kwanyama and the Mbunda.

After a protracted anti-colonial struggle, Angola achieved independence in 1975 as a Marxist–Leninist one-party Republic. The country descended into a devastating civil war the same year, between the ruling People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba, the insurgent National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, an originally Maoist and later anti-communist group supported by the United States and South Africa, and the militant organization National Liberation Front of Angola, backed by Zaire. The country has been governed by MPLA ever since its independence in 1975. Following the end of the war in 2002, Angola emerged as a relatively stable unitary, presidential constitutional republic.

Angola has vast mineral and petroleum reserves, and its economy is among the fastest-growing in the world, especially since the end of the civil war; however, economic growth is highly uneven, with most of the nation's wealth concentrated in a disproportionately small part of the population; the largest investment and trade partners are China and the United States. The standard of living remains low for most Angolans; life expectancy is among the lowest in the world, while infant mortality is among the highest.[9] Since 2017, the government of João Lourenço has made fighting corruption its flagship, so much so that many individuals of the previous government are either jailed or awaiting trial. Whilst this effort has been recognised by foreign diplomats to be legitimate, some skeptics see the actions as being politically motivated.

Angola is a member of the United Nations, OPEC, African Union, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, and the Southern African Development Community. As of 2021, the Angolan population is estimated at 32.87 million. Angola is multicultural and multiethnic. Angolan culture reflects centuries of Portuguese influence, namely the predominance of the Portuguese language and of the Catholic Church, intermingled with a variety of indigenous customs and traditions.

Angola , officially the Republic of Angola , is a country on the west coast of Southern Africa.

It is the seventh-largest country in Africa, bordered by Namibia to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Zambia to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Angola has an exclave province, the province of Cabinda that borders the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The capital and largest city of Angola is Luanda.

The territory of Angola has been inhabited since the Paleolithic Era, hosting a wide variety of ethnic groups, tribes and kingdoms.

The nation state of Angola originated from Portuguese colonisation, which initially began with coastal settlements and trading posts founded in the 16th century.

In the 19th century, European settlers gradually began to establish themselves in the interior.

The Portuguese colony that became Angola did not have its present borders until the early 20th century because of resistance by groups such as the Cuamato, the Kwanyama and the Mbunda.

After a protracted anti-colonial struggle, independence was achieved in 1975 as the Marxist–Leninist People's Republic of Angola, a one-party state supported by the Soviet Union and Cuba.

The civil war between the ruling People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola and the insurgent anti-communist National Union for the Total Independence of Angola , supported by the United States and apartheid South Africa, lasted until 2002.

The sovereign state has since become a relatively stable unitary, presidential constitutional republic.

Angola's economic growth is highly uneven, with most of the nation's wealth concentrated in a disproportionately small sector of the population

There are more than 6,000 men currently imprisoned at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola—three-quarters of them are there for life, and nearly 80 percent are African American. It's the end of the line for many convicted criminals in Louisiana, which has the highest incarceration rate of any state in the U.S. In this Atlantic original documentary, national correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg goes inside Angola to speak with inmates and with warden Burl Cain, who has managed the prison for two decades. Cain and his colleagues grapple with the crucial question: What does rehabilitation look like when you're locked away for life?

Read Goldberg's recent reflection on the filmmaking process (http://theatln.tc/1MmKfuG), as well as his in-depth report on crime in Louisiana, "A Matter of Black Lives," from The Atlantic's September issue (http://theatln.tc/1HE39rg).

Authors: Jeffrey Goldberg, Sam Price-Waldman, Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg

Elizabeth I is famous in Western history for dominating a role normally held by men as queen of England, but she had a contemporary across the oceans in Africa - Queen Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba. Not only did Nzinga successfully take her place as a queen in place of a king, but she fought back the Portuguese, took lands, and became a modern icon in Angola. This video looks at her life, her controversies, and her legacy...

During the war in Angola colonial aircraft regularly used napalm and dropped defoliants on peaceful villages. However, the 13-year resistance was not ineffective. The Portuguese empire was severely exhausted by the struggle against the national liberation movements.
