What is the true cost of corruption? We look at Angola as a case study in this video to try to analyze just how damaging a cleptocracy can be for the people of a nation. We not only detail the crimes (and name names), but we also do a quantitative analysis comparing Angola to countries that had just average levels of corruption from 2000-2009 to get a sense of what Angola could have been.

Here is a link to the full data set we compiled for that analysis:

The Angolan Civil War was directly after the Angolan War of Independence. After the Carnation Revolution 1974, Angola had been granted its independence and had been split up into three factions: the MPLA, the FNLA and UNITA. What followed was a mass civil war, with foreign intervention, and of vital importance to the Cold War.

One of the longest military interventions in the Cold War was the Cuban intervention in the Angolan Civil War. But why did Cuba, a small country a literal ocean away decide to intervene in an African Civil War. And what happened after it did so? About Angola
Angola's importance lies in its abundant natural resources, particularly its vast reserves of oil and diamonds. As one of Africa's leading oil producers, it plays a crucial role in the global energy market. Additionally, its diamond deposits have contributed to its prominence in the world's diamond trade.
Throughout its history, Angola has experienced periods of turmoil, including a long struggle for independence from Portuguese colonial rule and a devastating civil war. However, in recent years, the country has made significant progress in stabilizing its political situation and focusing on economic development.
Angola's general reputation around the world is multifaceted. While its resource wealth has attracted international interest and investment, the country has also faced scrutiny over issues of governance, corruption, and human rights. Nevertheless, Angola is a nation of vast potential and cultural diversity, with warm and hospitable people, breathtaking landscapes, and a bright future ahead. Join us as we delve deeper into Angola's history, geography, people, facts, and economy to uncover the true essence of this captivating nation!
The History of Angola
The history of Angola is a complex tapestry woven with the threads of ancient civilizations, European exploration, colonialism, and a long struggle for independence. The region's story begins with the presence of various indigenous tribes, with evidence of human settlement dating back thousands of years.
During the 15th century, Portuguese explorers arrived on the shores of Angola, establishing trade relations and eventually claiming the territory as a Portuguese colony. Over the centuries, the Portuguese exploited Angola's resources, particularly its valuable slave trade, which resulted in the forced migration of millions of Africans to the Americas.
Angola's path to independence was marked by resistance and upheaval. The nationalist movement, led by various liberation groups, fought against Portuguese rule throughout the 20th century. The culmination of this struggle came on November 11, 1975, when Angola finally gained independence from Portugal.
However, the newfound independence led to a bitter civil war that persisted for nearly three decades. The conflict pitted the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) against the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), with external involvement from other countries during the Cold War era. The war devastated the country and led to immense human suffering.
The civil war eventually came to an end in 2002, paving the way for reconstruction and reconciliation. Since then, Angola has worked towards political stability and economic development, capitalizing on its vast natural resources, particularly oil and diamonds. Despite challenges, the country continues its journey of nation-building, embracing its diverse cultural heritage and striving to create a brighter future for its people.

Hi Welcome to another episode of African Biographics, in this video we go back in history to do a brief explaination of the Angolan Civil War. The war started in 1975 when fighting between the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), led by Jose Eduardo DOS SANTOS, and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), led by Jonas SAVIMBI, followed the country’s independence from Portugal in that same year.

The war quickly degenerated into a proxy war for the Cold War with the Soviet Union and Cuba supporting the MPLA while he FNLA and UNITA were supported by South Africa, Zaire, China and the United States.

Peace seemed imminent in 1992 when Angola held national elections, but fighting picked up again in 1993. Up to 1.5 million lives may have been lost - and 4 million people displaced - during the more than a quarter century of fighting.

In this video we look at the background of this war, the different phases during the war and what led to eventual peace in Angola.
