Bioethics Colloquium with Marion Nestle

Almost anything related to food raises ethics issues of one kind or another. Examples: Is it ethical to eat meat? Is it ethical for "junk food" manufacturers to market to children or to low-income consumers in the United States or in developing countries? Is it ethical to promote the use of meal replacement products to children who are not in emergency situations? Such issues do not have easy answers and, for that reason, are worth serious thought.

Since 2015, the long-running conspiracy theory of a flat Earth – that we live on a flat plane, under a flat dome, or on a planet circled by a ring of ice – has increasingly gained a foothold in the mainstream. What was once a concept on the fringes of society, seen as a long-running joke and kept to niche message boards, pamphlets, and blogs, is now a widespread idea held by millions of people, including politicians, media personalities, athletes, and celebrities. Where did this theory come from and why is it suddenly everywhere?

Daily Beast extremism and internet journalist – and leading voice on online conspiracy theories –Kelly Weill will give a definitive and compelling history of the Flat Earth movement, from its origins in an 1800s English commune to its spread in the early 2000s with the rise of Facebook and YouTube to the recent disinformation campaign of the 2020 presidential election and COVID-19 pandemic.

Kelly Weill is a journalist at the Daily Beast, where she covers extremism, disinformation, and the internet. As a leading media voice on the role of online conspiracy theories in current affairs, she has discussed Flat Earth and other digital fringes on ABC’s Nightline, CNN, Al Jazeera, and other national and international news outlets. She lives in New York.

Building the climate resilience of African cities fits squarely within the category of complex problems that may benefit from taking a transdisciplinary approach to co-producing actionable knowledge between multiple actors and disciplines. Yet one of the key challenges in implementing a transdisciplinary approach is building enough trust, familiarity and understanding across various boundaries to engage in meaningful co-production.

The Future Resilience for African Cities and Lands (FRACTAL) project employed several strategies to address this challenge, one of which is the establishment of Embedded Researchers.

This webinar gave participants an overview of the main points raised in the FRACTAL Working Paper entitled “An Embedded Researcher approach to integrate climate information into decision making in southern African cities: lessons from FRACTAL”, including:

1. The conceptual underpinnings and rationale of the Embedded Researcher approach;
2. An overview of how the Embedded Researcher approach was operationalised in FRACTAL; through a coordinated city partnerships approach;
3. The benefits of and inhibitors to the Embedded Researcher approach;
4. The lessons learned that may be transferable to other contexts.

Speakers:

Dr Anna Taylor - FRACTAL embedded research coordinator, Climate System Analysis Group, University of Cape Town, South Africa -

FRACTAL Embedded Researchers:

Urban (heritage) tourism has become an important segment of the global tourism market, offering opportunities for socioeconomic growth and development, especially in former industrial cities. Heritage tourism districts also have become a popular investment for cities seeking to boost the local economies of historically disenfranchised neighborhoods.

When it comes to equitable development and environmental sustainability, however, urban heritage tourism efforts warrant a detailed inspection. Heritage tourism efforts do not necessarily reap economic benefits for all residents and business owners and can lead to negative health, environmental and sociocultural impacts.

Dr. Corinna Moebius and Dr. Graylyn Swilley-Woods joined the Smart Growth Network for “Creating Equitable and Sustainable Urban Heritage Tourism Districts” to draw upon their original research and experiences in heritage tourism districts to outline the steps needed to help these districts and destinations achieve long-term success.
