Supermarkets offer a pathway through which suppliers can make available their products not just in their local respective countries but throughout the Southern African region.

In this video, Reena Das Nair of the Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development (CCRED) discusses the challenges and bottlenecks that make it very difficult for suppliers to get their products onto supermarket shelves and how some of these challenges can be overcome.

Supermarkets are hard to market in Tanzania , unless the client is willing to loose a lot of money without immediate return on investment . The reason why supermarkets are hard to market , is similar to the same reason as to why they die in Tanzania
The main reason is market behaviour , in psychology we are told its harder to change someone’s mind and it’s easier to just sell them what they already believe in . Tanzanians for the majority have grown in poverty . The rich Tanzanians are self-made . These self made middle class on paper will make a great customer base for supermarkets but in reality they don’t because these middle classmen are used to eating in shanty restaurants . The are used to buying from shops that are made of wood and on the blink of collapse.
They are used to buying fish from markets that smell like hell , they are used to it and not disgusted by it . This means even though your supermarket is cleaner and safer . It is not reason enough for them to abandon the almost collapsing shop next door .

The tribunal’s ruling backs a similar pronouncement by the Competition Authority of Kenya, which in February 2020 found Carrefour Kenya in breach of fair competition practices by forcing its suppliers to issue rebates and pay listing fees to have their goods on its shelves between 2015 and 2018.

The retailer had also been accused of transfering commercial risk to the supplier and unilateral delisting of suppliers.

Majid Al Futtaim, which holds the Carrefour franchise in more than 30 countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, appealed against the authority’s decision through the tribunal. Both rulings say the current supplier agreements give the retailer an unfair edge over its competitors through huge discounts to customers, but to the detriment of suppliers.

Carrefour opened its first retail store in Kenya in 2016, and now operates 12 outlets across the cities of Nairobi and Mombasa. Its sales in East Africa's largest economy jumped 28% between 2018 and 2019 to $172m (£124m).

This growth came at a time when home-grown supermarket brands such as Uchumi and Nakumatt collapsed.

2020 prices in supermarkets in Windhoek, Namibia's capital. Video was made in several stores in Windhoek.

#Windhoek2020Prices #SupermarketsNamibia #SouthernAfrica

Windhoek:
http://www.namibweb.com/windhoek.htm

Timecodes:
0:07 Checkers Maerua Mall shopping center
1:39 Checkers foodcourt
2:51 Checkers fruit & veg department

Prices are in Namibian dollars. Approximate exchange rates:
1 Euro = 17 Nam$
1 US$ = 14 Nam$
1 SA Rand = 1 Nam$

Major supermarkets in Windhoek are Pick and Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Woermann Brock, OK Foods and Spar.

Maerua Lifestyle Centre Spar Supermarket
Despite it being far for some and located in what is largely seen as an upper crust side of town, the Maerua Lifestyle Centre Spar Supermarket offers one of the better shopping experiences as far as supermarkets go. It has a well organised and spacious floor plan, with good room between aisles for trolleys. It is always clean and the cashiers are friendly and polite. It also has a wider variety of food selections, for example, their gluten-free range, that not many other supermarkets have.

Pick n' Pay Chain of Supermarkets
Maybe it's the bright blue colour, or the simple marketing, but Pick n' Pay supermarkets always project an image of efficiency and good service. Some branches, like the Katutura one, could do with more attention to cleanliness, but all in all shopping at any Pick n' Pay, is a good experience. They have good month end specials and people from all walks of life feel comfortable shopping at Pick n' Pay.

Woermann & Brock chain of Supermarkets
They say that one rotten orange can ruin an entire harvest, which is true in the case of Woermann & Brock Supermarkets. The service at W & B supermarkets is not the best, where the cashiers have little to no interaction with the customers, and work in numb silence as if at a factory. Unfriendly exchanges between management and staff are also a common occurrence at some W & B supermarkets. The meat packaging at the Eros W & B is often bloody and poorly done, which is a big health risk for customers that handle the meat. W & B is also notorious for unexplainable and unadvertised price fluctuations.

The levels of supermarket concentration in Windhoek are actually very similar to those in similar-sized South African cities. The Namibian supermarket revolution is incomplete in the sense that, unlike in South Africa, it has not involved wholesale transformation of the agro-food system as a whole. Some large-scale Namibian farms (particularly in the beef and vegetables sector) have been able to take advantage of new demands from supermarkets but the overall number of local producer-beneficiaries is small. Smallholders, in particular, have not been integrated into supermarket supply chains. Government protectionism has prompted some adjustment in supermarket strategies of procurement (particularly for processed cereal products) but, as this paper shows, the vast majority of supermarket products sold in supermarkets in Windhoek are imported from South Africa. Indeed, supermarkets in Windhoek appear to be fully integrated into the same supply and distribution chains as South African cities.

When used as refrigerants, flourocarbons can cause severe damage to the Earth's ozone layer. That's why a South African supermarket chain is changing direction to use natural and eco-friendly refrigerant technologies - and saving money and energy as a result.Electricity is especially costly in South Africa. In the last few years the price has been rising by nearly 30 percent annually. Meanwhile, power shortages have been reported. So a supermarket chain called Pick 'n Pay is investing in new equipment. Instead of using flourocarbon gases to cool its outlets, it's now using natural refrigerants.

Julius Maboloka is a 36-year-old farmer from Lesotho who is now supplying vegetables to large supermarket chains across Lesotho and neighboring South Africa. Julius, who inherited a passion for farming from his parents, started out farming in the open field and used to face challenges due to unreliable weather conditions and scarce water resources. He was eventually able to expand and sustain his business thanks to a grant from the Smallholder Agriculture Development Project (SADP). Through the SADP, which is supported by the World Bank, 55,000 farmers across four districts in Lesotho applied for and won public grants which have helped them increase their competitiveness and have better access to markets.

Most Africans still buy their food at teeming, chaotic open-air food markets that would make many hygiene-conscious Westerners squirm. But a new study has yielded a surprising finding: that some goods from these informal markets are no less safe -- or fresh -- than what is found in the Western-style African supermarkets that are spreading across the continent. VOA’s Anita Powell reports.
