CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC
In a statement issued yesterday afternoon about the situation in the Central African Republic, the Secretary-General took note of the final results of the first round of legislative elections, proclaimed by the Constitutional Court on Monday. He also said that he remains very concerned about armed clashes and threats to civilians in the country and strongly condemns the violence and reiterates his call for a global ceasefire. He urges all parties to immediately halt hostilities.
The perpetrators of grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, as well as serious crimes, including the killing of civilians and UN peacekeepers, must be held accountable, he said.

PALESTINIANS
The Secretary-General earlier today discussed the challenges over the coming year for Israelis and Palestinians, in remarks to the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian people.
He said that the pandemic has had a severe impact on the Palestinians, particularly in Gaza. The UN and its partners are supporting the Palestinian Government’s work to control the spread of the pandemic. The Secretary-General added that the Special Coordinator continues to encourage Israel to support the COVID-19 vaccine availability, which is in line with Israel’s obligations under international law.
Mr. Guterres said that President Mahmoud Abbas’s call for an international peace conference under the auspices of the United Nations – and an expanded Middle East Quartet – provides a positive opportunity to advance peace in the region. 
He also called on the parties to refrain from unilateral acts that can jeopardize the possibility of restarting the peace process.
That event took place in person in the General Assembly Hall.

DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL/ SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
This morning, the Deputy Secretary-General – Amina Mohammed - spoke via a video message at the Global Engagement and Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development. She stressed that to ensure that societies rebuild in a sustainable and resilient manner, our collective response and recovery efforts must be rooted in the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
She added that we need more targeted assistance for the furthest behind who are most vulnerable and have the least resilience.
Ms. Mohammed also said that we must act multilaterally to mobilize more development assistance and socially conscious investments and enhance our social protection systems.

Youth climate activism has continued to raise the consciousness of the urgency with which public and political action on the climate crisis is required.

The continent of Africa bears the brunt of the impact of the climate crisis and young Africans are at the frontline of climate action, however, they are not seen on the front page (and sometimes even deleted from the front page), nor are their voices heard during the debates on climate change.

What will it take to get their voices to the table? What do they offer to the conversations? and what are they optimistic about?

Our Chairperson, Wanjira Mathai, hosted this conversation with Greta Thunberg, Elizabeth Wathuti a young climate activist from Kenya, Vanessa Nakate a young climate activist from Uganda, Olumide Idowu a climate activist from Nigeria and Professor Youba Sokona, a climate scientist from Africa.

Coming up in this week's programme: We head to Rwanda and meet a young woman who was orphaned during the genocide. We also find out why an Arsenal fan from Kenya caught the attention of star player Mesut Özil and we meet a young man in Nigeria who uses chess to develop young talent.

Cabinet says the manipulation of the rand is a move by some in the private sector to destabilise the government. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says the scandal shows that some banks have no interest in developing South Africa.

Economist Lebohang Pheko gives some perspective on banks that have been accused of manipulating the rand.

HAITI
We issued a statement a short while ago in which the Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse of the Republic of Haiti. The perpetrators of this crime must be brought to justice. The Secretary-General extends his deepest condolences to the people and Government of Haiti and the family of the late President.
The Secretary-General calls on all Haitians to preserve the constitutional order, remain united in the face of this abhorrent act and reject all violence. The United Nations will continue to stand with the Government and people of Haiti.

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC
Our humanitarian colleagues tell us that the situation remains tense in Alindao, following cyclical armed violence in the past week.
Yesterday, in Bangui, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the UN, Denise Brown, strongly condemned the armed violence - compounded by serious violations of international humanitarian law - that has left at least two civilians dead. The violence has also displaced thousands of already displaced people, injuring a humanitarian worker, and leading to a significant reduction in humanitarian assistance in the city.

EXTREME WEATHER
Many parts of the world are experiencing unprecedented weather patterns. We’ve seen record heatwaves in Canada and the Pacific Northwest; wildfires in Europe and mudslides in Asia.
In a tweet, the Secretary-General said that all over the world natural disasters have become more frequent and more severe and that this means every country, city and industry needs to step up its climate action now.
The World Meteorological Organization said that the heatwave in Canada and the US had major impacts on people, animals and vegetation. It noted that so many records were broken in June regarding high temperatures that it was hard to keep track.

ETHIOPIA
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) today said that the humanitarian situation in Tigray is worsening with stocks of relief aid, cash and fuel running very low or depleted. Partners have run out of stocks for food distribution, with the exception of some areas where supplies had already been dispatched.
According to OCHA, the only access route to Tigray, via Afar, using the Semera-Abala corridor, has been inaccessible since 22 August due to insecurity and bureaucratic and logistical challenges.

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has taken note of the final results of the residual legislative elections of July 25th, proclaimed by the Constitutional Court. This announcement marked the end of the 2020-21 legislative elections in the country, with 140 candidates elected to parliament, including 18 women.

COVAX
Pakistan has received over 18 million vaccine doses since May and had 6 million more doses expected to arrive in September. As of yesterday, more than 56 million doses have been administered.
The UN team in Pakistan, led by Resident Coordinator Julien Harneis, is continuing its support to the national response. The World Health Organization (WHO) established three vaccination centres in Islamabad and provided medical, laboratory and protective equipment, including ambulances, 50 ventilators, 100 oxygen concentrators, 50 suction devices, 20 ECG machines, and 50 automated beds.

UK-based Standard Chartered Bank has reached a settlement with the Competition Commission for colluding with 27 other banks to manipulate the rand's value against the US dollar.

While Standard Chartered has come forward and paid a fine, a number of other local and international banks including Absa, Standard Bank, Nedbank, Barclays and Bank of America are still under investigation.

Mali And Russia Signs Deal To Build West Africa's Largest Gold Refinery - In a significant development, Malian authorities have revealed the formalization of an agreement with Russia for the establishment of a gold refinery in Bamako, the nation's capital. This marks one of the latest collaborations between the two nations, encompassing various agreements, with a notable focus on the construction of West Africa's most extensive gold refinery, boasting an annual capacity of 200 tons.
The memorandum, as reported by Minister of Economy and Finance Alousseni Sanou during an interview with the national television station ORTM late Tuesday, is set to be effective for an undisclosed four-year period. According to Sanou, The project aims to achieve comprehensive oversight of gold production, ensuring the accurate application of all associated taxes and duties.

In 2022, Mali, a major gold producer in Africa, achieved a gold output of 72.2 tonnes (79.6 tons), with 66.2 tonnes attributed to industrial production, marking an 8.4% increase, as reported by the Malian statistical agency.
Gold constitutes approximately one-quarter of Mali's fiscal revenues, positioning the country as a prominent gold producer on the continent. The majority of Mali's gold exports are directed to South Africa, with Switzerland and Australia following suit. Recent years have seen strengthened relations between Mali and Russia, particularly after the May 24, 2021 coup and the withdrawal of French forces from Operation Barkhane in 2022.
