An overnight curfew has been imposed in the Indian Ocean nation of Comoros, the country’s interior ministry said, after violent protests spread in light of President Azali Assoumani's re-election that was denounced by the oppositon. Security forces fired tear gas to disperse the protesters in Moroni on Wednesday, and crowds were still on the streets in the north of the capital in the early hours of Thursday. Comoros Incumbent President Azali Assoumani was declared the winner of the January 14 election that the opposition called an "electoral fraud". Voter turnout stood officially at 16.3%.

The public prosecutor Moussa Djibrine at a news conference said 262 persons were given jail sentences, 80 were given suspended terms and 59 were acquitted.
The defendants were charged with taking part in an unauthorised gathering, destroying belongings, arson and disturbing public order.

The leader of France-allied Chad hailed ties with Russia during a meeting on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said the Kremlin would help to "stabilise" the African country. Chad is France's close partner in the Sahel region and the meeting came as tensions between Moscow and Paris escalate over the conflict in Ukraine.
