The 8th All Africa Games were October 5 -17, 2003 in Abuja, Nigeria. 53 countries participated in 23 sports. The main venue was the newly constructed Abuja Stadium. The organizing committee was headed by Nigerian Amos Adamu. Nigeria won the Gold @ the event. Uchenna Emedolu defeated Frank Fredricks of Namibia to win the Gold for Nigeria

On the theme of rebirth and regeneration, the Opening Ceremony was an exploration of the African history and the woes it suffered but also a tribute to the resilience and dynamism of the African people.

Based on a concept from Nobel Prize of Litterature Pr. Wole Soyinka, the Ceremony combined tradition and modernity. A giant anthill, monumental image projection on the set-up, field of play and stands, flame ballet and a grand pyrotechnic finale were all part of a design that featured more than 5000 performers in this moving and spectacular show.

The Kenya National Sports Council requires 100 million shillings, against a target of 300 million shillings, to adequately prepare and send the Kenyan team to 10th all Africa games in Maputo Mozambique in September. The government has pledged 200 million shillings, and the council is planning to raise the extra cash through sponsorship.

The National Women's Basketball team will return home empty handed after being bundled out of the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique when they were beaten 76-44 by Senegal in the quarterfinals on Friday night. Elsewhere, embattled National Women's Volleyball team booster Jane Wacu has denied allegations of being a bad influence to the team that led her indefinite suspension Friday. The national tae kwon do team is targeting at least 16 medals in the forthcoming all Africa games, slated for September 3rd to 18th in Maputo, Mozambique. The team is also gearing up for the world Olympic qualifiers to be held in Azerbaijan later this month.

An entrepreneur in Uganda is trying to develop a centuries-old yard game, known as Kwepena, worldwide.

Simon Tumukunde is aiming to take the game, popular among children all over Africa, to the Olympics.

He has turned Kwepena into a sport by defining the court dimensions, writing rules and introducing a regulation ball.
