On Sunday, February 12, 2023, Tanzania floated the largest ship in the Great Lakes Region at Port Mwanza, Tanzania in Lake Victoria. According to Tanzania Times, MV Mwanza will traverse Lake Victoria, via Mwanza and Bukoba ports of Tanzania, Kisumu port of Kenya, and Port Bell of Uganda to improve transport among the three nations that share the lake. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa, the largest tropical lake in the world, and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world after Lake Superior in North America. MV Mwanza is being built by Songoro Marine Transport Limited for $46.6 million; is 93 meters long; will be able to transport 1,200 passengers, 400 tons of cargo, and 20 vehicles; and is 82% complete. As mentioned in Tanzania Times, compartments on the ship are divided into economy, business, and first-class and will have “all creature comforts and modern facilities.” All four ports MV Mwanza will anchor at are connected to railways.

In the Republic of Tanzania on 13 February, unveiled and floated a locally built cargo and passenger vessel on the port of Lake Victoria, Mwanza’s north-western city.

The ship, launched at the Mwanza South Port on February 12, can carry 1,200 passengers, 400 tonnes of cargo, 20 small vehicles and three trucks. It is currently 82 percent complete.

"Up to this point of float-out, we can say the ship is complete and the remaining 18 percent is just minor installations that will be done in less than four months," said Eric Hamissi, the chief executive officer of Tanzania's Marine Services Company Limited.

Hamissi explained that the next phase includes finishing internal aesthetics such as paintwork, fixing air conditioners, beds, and toilets and installing navigation equipment.
