In response to the tragic murder of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, Shooting Without Bullets, a Cleveland-based art program, was born. The art program is offered to teenagers ages 13-17, and it works to combat social injustices by providing an artistic outlet for black and brown youth. Through photography and other artistic mediums, students are asked to process and comment on racial and socioeconomic inequities that exist around them. Brad sits down with Creative Director, Amanda D. King and Chief Operating Officer, Kelsi Carter to talk about the organization’s work and impact.

Shareholder activism is one tactic SumOfUs uses to build a just and sustainable economy. Let’s bring the fight to promote people and planet over profit directly to the world’s largest corporations and make them listen. Remember, when shareholder power stands up to corporate power, we win!

As Christians, we are called by God to live to His standards that He sets in the Bible. In the recent years corporations have become involved in social and political activism that ultimately reflects the character of their leadership and their customers. Frequently, these values are very contrary to Christian values. How should we respond to the world around us in a way that reflects God’s character and His presence in our lives?

In this episode, our host Helen Todd talks with Phillip Todd, an economist for the US Senate who specializes in issues concerning small businesses. They discuss the recent news about Ben and Jerry’s deciding to withhold business from the West Bank, what causes corporate activism, and how should Christians respond to see positive change in the future.

2:30 - Helen and Phillip talk about Ben and Jerry’s recent business decision.

6:00 - The causes of corporate activism.

14:45 - Do corporations need to take political stands on certain issues?

17:45 - Phillip describes the effect of boycotts against companies.

22:20 - “If more people take a stand… you’re building a coalition.”

24:00 - The CEO’s role in making political and social decisions.

26:15 - Could corporate activism lead to a divided economy?

The final event in our Activism in Action theme of the Criminal Justice Event Series features Elisabeth Epps, who established the Colorado Freedom Fund (CFF) in 2018. The CFF is comprised of abolitionists who are trying to work themselves out of existence. They support litigation, legislation, and direct action to end wealth-based pre-trial detention, and the fund, itself, is used to pay cash bail in full for individuals who cannot afford to pay it themselves. It has paid bail amounts from $50 to $50,000. After CFF pays bail, they work with released individuals to ensure they attend their court dates and have their cases resolved.

The CFF’s work is meaningful in a number of ways: It illuminates how a structural feature of the criminal justice system is set up to criminalize poverty, and more directly, it provides individuals accused but not convicted of crimes with their freedom prior to their trials or plea bargains. People who are free prior to the resolution of their cases are able to maintain their health, housing, family and other relationships, and employment. Also, they have better case outcomes, as well in that they are more likely to have their cases dismissed and less likely to plead guilty.

Part of being an activist is being intersectional, including everyone in your activism. And I've noticed a pattern of activism that includes every minority except disabled people. And not only that, but causing a lot of harm to us in the process. So let's talk about it.

(Also I want to acknowledge that some of the things I say in this video are considered "hot takes", I am happy to have a discussion about it but I ask that you please remember to stay kind in the comments. Thank you!!)

Environmental activism, Community empowerment and local actions - From theory to practice in Sustainable Architecture
Speaker: Ivan Ralis

What does being sustainable really mean to us as architects and how does that actually work in real life projects? How does one try changing things for the better, little by little? How to empower and help local builders who want to introduce new building techniques or organisations who want to try out new things? Based on the "non profit" projects WEbuilding has been carrying out, Ivan will share some of the experience the team gathered along the way. (During the Zero Waste Berlin Festival, WEbuilding will share some knowledge about Sustainable Architecture and how activism can empower local communities).

Ami Chen Mills-Naim talks with us about how she got into activism, particularly around politics and the climate crisis. She reminds us that spirituality and anger, and/or opposition, are not mutually exclusive, and protesting is often necessary to get the attention necessary for creating any kind of meaningful change. She shows us that we can show up, be human, and learn about - and fight against - grave injustices, without losing touch with our essential nature and oneness.

Her grounding and humility have allowed her to learn about her own biases without taking them personally, while still committing to personal change and growth in these areas. She courageously holds conversations with others she disagrees with in order to impart this wisdom and to see if they can find common ground.

Ami shows us that it's possible to hold more than one feeling and viewpoint at once (e.g. anger and love). She has joined many activist groups and enjoys bringing the spiritual side to the work she does on these issues. We admire her fortitude in joining these movements that are working tirelessly to push forth equality and human rights, as well as efforts to fight the climate crisis we face as residents of this planet.

Ami Chen Mills-Naim is a global speaker, coach, trainer, and author of State of Mind in the Classroom: Thought, Consciousness and the Essential Curriculum for Healthy Learning, and The Spark Inside: A Special Book for Youth. With her late father, the social scientist Dr. Roger Mills she co-founded the non-profit Center for Sustainable Change, and served as its Executive Director and Education Director for a decade. She has been a speaker on innate wellness and resiliency, and a trainer of the “Three Principles” for more than 30 years. In response to recent, global events, she launched a YouTube Channel called The Heart of America, utilizing her journalism skills.
