Comics book creators take note: Kickstarter employees have voted to unionize, but it's not simply because of better working conditions. Thanks to a controversial comic book funding campaign, Kickstarter employees now want the ability to help dictate the kinds of projects the company allows to be funded on the platform and they've said as much. It shouldn't be all that surprising, as Kickstarter itself re-incorporated in 2015 to be a "Public Benefit Corporation" and not a for profit company. This is important when understanding what is going on with comic book crowdfunding today, and why some campaigns -- like "Jawbreakers" -- were cancelled with little or no explanation.

We're not going to end violence by telling people that it's morally wrong, says Jamila Raqib, executive director of the Albert Einstein Institution. Instead, we must find alternative ways to conduct conflict that are equally powerful and effective. Raqib promotes nonviolent resistance to people living under tyranny -- and there's a lot more to it than street protests. She shares encouraging examples of creative strategies that have led to change around the world and a message of hope for a future without armed conflict. "The greatest hope for humanity lies not in condemning violence but in making violence obsolete," Raqib says.

For three years now, activists of the stop cop city movement are fighting with Atlanta to restrict the construction of a military base in the middle of the city.

Despite a long and feisty fight - mainstream media sources lack coverage of Cop City or are manufacturing the consent of the audience. In this video essay, we explore the propaganda campaign that surrounds cop city and how the government is building a case to attack climate activists with terrorist changes.

Despite movements like Black Lives Matter and uprising strikes and strong social movements in US and worldwide - both Biden democrats and republicans in the US are doubling down on funding for police and military. United states are not alone in this race - Europe, UK and Australia have published real prison sentences for activists from Earth Liberation Front, Just Stop Oil, Extension Rebellion and Land Defenders / Water Protectors.

For several years now, governments are cranking out laws that are meant to restrict climate activists and attach real prison sentences to climate activism that takes a position against climate change. Cop City is only the beginning of the false criminal accusations that will be meant to worsen as a defence for the rich and powerful in the future.

David Fenton shares lessons learned as one of the world's leading progressive media activists. Working closely with the likes of Nelson Mandela, Jane Fonda, Bruce Springsteen, Al Gore, and Abbie Hoffman, David Fenton was a driving force behind many of the most history-making social movements and progressive media campaigns of the past 50 years. Fenton is joined in conversation with Judy Gumbo, one of the few female members of the original Yippies.

“In the struggles against apartheid, the nuclear arms race, unjust wars, racist drug laws, to stop climate and toxic pollution, David Fenton's work has helped movements advance justice.”

—JANE FONDA

“The service rendered to the African National Congress by Fenton Communications during the difficult years, has been of great value to us... beyond doubt.”

—NELSON MANDELA

“Activists need to be communicators and story-tellers. David Fenton knows this at his core and has helped the environmental and climate movement reach the public for decades.”

—MARK RUFFALO

“Any student of American history in the last half-century will profit from this inside account—and anyone trying to make change now will profit from grappling with these hard-earned lessons.”

—BILL McKIBBEN

David Fenton has been the driving force behind some of the most important and history-making campaigns of the last 50 years. In his extraordinary career as a visionary activist, he has learned first-hand what to do—and not to do—to propel progressive causes into the public eye and create real, impactful, lasting change. In his new book The Activist's Media Handbook, Fenton provides an essential toolkit for today’s activists: how to tell your story, captivate audiences, and inspire them to join the cause.

David Fenton is the former Director of Public Relations at Rolling Stone magazine and was Co-Producer of the No-Nukes concerts in 1979 at Madison Square Garden with Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Jackson Browne and other artists. Some of Fenton’s best-known campaigns include aiding the rise of MoveOn.org, stimulating the rise in organic food sales, a decade representing Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress, passing sanctions against apartheid, saving swordfish from extinction with a coalition of top chefs, working with Al Gore and the United Nations on climate change and many others.

Judy Gumbo is the author of Yippie Girl: Exploits in Protest and Defeating the FBI. Born in Toronto, Canada, she is one of the few female members of the original Yippies, a satirical protest group founded in the 1960s that levitated the Pentagon to stop the Vietnam War, brought the New York Stock Exchange to a halt to ridicule greed and ran a pig named Pigasus for President at the 1968 Democratic Convention, resulting in police violence, arrests, and the notorious "Chicago 7" conspiracy trial. As part of her activism, Judy founded a national women's rights organization, helped organize the world's first Earth Day, visited North Vietnam during the war, and travelled the globe agitating against the war and for the liberation of women. Her activism led to unwarranted surveillance by the FBI; she later successfully sued to obtain copies of their extensive records on her. Judy has a Ph.D. in Sociology and spent the majority of her professional career as an award-winning fundraiser for Planned Parenthood. She currently lives in Berkeley, California.

Explore the paradox of welfare programs, and learn how they inadvertently reinforce generational poverty, and what we can do to fix them.

--

Imagine that you’ve been unemployed for months. Government benefit programs have helped you cover your expenses, but you’re barely getting by. Finally, you receive a paycheck— but there’s a catch. Your new job pays enough to disqualify you from benefit programs, but not enough to cover your costs. So how do we design benefit programs that don’t penalize you for working? Ann-Helén Bay investigates.

Lesson by Ann-Helén Bay, directed by Avi Ofer.

Next is a topic that’s been on everyone’s minds throughout the year. Nonprofits in Ukraine are acting as first responders in the war and are under tremendous stress. But usually the last thing nonprofits worry about is taking care of themselves. That’s why TechSoup Europe is building a program that provides quick answers to the challenges of staying resilient. Anna Kuliberda, Senior Advisor for TechSoup Europe shares more in the next demo.

PRESENTER: Anna Kuliberda
Independent coach and consultant, with a "Humans not robots" perspective. I support activists' initiatives and non-profit organizations in management, innovation, and change. In addition to being the founder of The Radical Act of Self-Care, I specialize in program curation for events with meaning in order to combat activists' burnout. I have been working with TechSoup Europe for 10 years supporting organizations in Central and Eastern Europe.
More about me at www.annakuliberda.com.

DEMONSTRATION
When non-profit organizations are suddenly confronted with a war situation, they face a multitude of challenges. Usually, the last thing on the list is supporting yourself, especially if it wasn't a practice in the pre-crisis era. That is why TechSoup Europe is building a program that provides quick answers to real-life challenges of staying resilient for Ukrainian organizations.
