Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been elected as the next president of Nigeria. The main opposition parties are launching a legal case, claiming the vote was riddled with irregularities.
Nigeria is Africa's most populous country with an estimated 216 million people. In the run up to the election, 87 million of them held the voter identity cards that permitted them to take part. But of these, just under 25 million Nigerians actually voted last week.
That made it the lowest-ever turnout in a Nigerian presidential vote. So what went wrong on election day?

Presidential polls in the African nation of Nigeria are almost over. Officials are now in the process of counting votes. Nearly ninety million people were eligible to cast their votes for appointing the successor of President Muhammadu Buhari. They are former Lagos governor and all progressive Congress' candidate Bola Tinubu. The surprise third party candidate Peter Obi, who is from the labor party and is a former governor of Anambra and People's Democratic Party candidate Atiku Abubakar who is a former vice President.
This is the first time since the end of military rule in 1999 that a serious candidate has entered the fray which has been dominated by the APC and the main opposition PDP. Nigeria is struggling with Islamist insurgencies in the northeast, an epidemic of kidnappings for ransom, conflict between herders and farmers, shortages of cash, fuel and power, as well as deep-rooted corruption and poverty. Many Nigerians were casting ballots on Saturday evening, hours after the official deadline for casting votes ended. In the federal capital Abuja, voters complained of glitches in uploading votes which caused delays. on the other side, Nigeria's commercial hub of Lagos saw armed men firing shots in air and snatching the presidential ballot box.
But despite such incidents, the electoral commission has said that--results in some provinces can be expected to be out later today. However, the final tally from all thirty-six states plus the federal capital is expected within five days. The election is also for the national assembly seats

Voting is under way in Sierra Leone’s tightly contested presidential and parliamentary elections amid a cost-of-living crisis.
Polling stations opened later than the scheduled time of 7am in the capital, Freetown, AFP journalists said on Saturday. They were due to close at 5pm (17:00 GMT).
Some 3.4 million people are registered to vote, 52.4 percent of whom are under 35 years old, according to an electoral commission spokesman.
13 candidates are vying for the presidential post, including incumbent Julius Maada Bio, with a crippling economic crisis, which sparked deadly riots last year, on top of the poll agenda.
Presidential candidates must secure 55 percent of valid votes for a first-round win.
Incumbent Bio’s main challenger is Samura Kamara of the All People’s Congress (APC) party.
Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Zimbabwe Elections 2023 | Zimbabwe Candidates Get Set For Presidential Election | News18 Live
On August 23, Zimbabweans head to the polls to choose the country’s next president in what political pundits believe will be a tight race.
Eleven candidates are vying for the top position. But the race is largely seen as a rematch between Nelson Chamisa, the 45-year-old opposition leader and the man who defeated him in the 2018 presidential election, Emmerson Mnangagwa, the incumbent president.
Mnangagwa, 80, who took over the reins from Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s first president, after a November 2017 coup, is the leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union–Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF).
Chamisa has led the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) since it was formed in January 2022 after a split from the Movement for Democratic Change – Alliance, previously the leading opposition party.
