President Cyril Ramaphosa says the government's message of congratulations to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on his re-election was made on the basis that the country's Electoral Commission had declared him the winner. President Ramaphosa says the SADC Observer Mission is still assessing the election, which the regional body said fell short of the constitutional requirements of Zimbabwe and the region.

Zimbabweans head to the polls Wednesday in a presidential contest that poses a test for the country’s fledgling democracy at a time of significant economic challenges.
The outcome will either entrench the dominance of the bullish ruling Zanu-PF party, which has governed the country since its independence in 1980, or mark a turning point for a beleaguered opposition, who have already complained this election season of crackdowns, intimidation and arrests.
It is only the second vote in the southern African country since authoritarian leader Robert Mugabe was deposed by the military in 2017.
Zimbabwe suffers from a raft of economic problems, including a staggering 175.8% inflation rate. It is also in the grip of an escalating cost-of-living crisis. The local currency lost more than half its value to the US dollar in June, and the country owes billions of dollars in debt arrears.

Today, Zimbabwe's President-elect Emmerson Mnangagwa will be inaugurated for his second term after winning the controversial August elections. Mnangagwa's party ZANU-PF emerged as the winner, securing more than 50 percent of the total votes cast, while the leading opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change, achieved more than 40 percent of the votes. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will also attend the inauguration and has congratulated the government and the people of Zimbabwe for organising and holding peaceful elections.

The governing party in Zimbabwe is expected to comment on scathing critiques from election observers this afternoon. The European Union Observer Mission says the polls fell short according to regional and international standards. The mission is concerned the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission did not make the voter's roll available. Zimbabweans went to the polls earlier this week to pick a president and law-makers. . More than 2.4 million people in the West African country, still scarred by back-to-back civil wars, will also elect lawmakers. Voting booths, opened at 0800 GMT will close at 1800 GMT, with the final results expected within 15 days.

The Southern African Development Community Election Observer Mission has released a scathing preliminary report on the Zimbabwe elections. The Mission says the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission assured them that it was ready to conduct the polls and that all material needed was available. But, on the day of the election, some polling stations did not have all the required voting materials. This forced elections to be extended by another day. Zimbabwe is scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on 23 August 2023. Key priority issues for the 6.6 million registered voters will include the economy, rising inflation, unemployment, electricity shortages, and diversification. Points of ideological contention among presidential aspirants continue to centre on how to balance Zimbabwe’s international relations policy and debt burden with local ownership of the country’s development trajectory.
This roundtable event provided a space for discussion among some of Zimbabwe’s key political parties and electoral candidates and reflected on the wider electoral environment. It took stock of the diversity of ideological visions and manifestos offered, and explored priorities for domestic, regional, and international engagement.
