In 1965, Britain quietly created its last colony - the British Indian Ocean Territory - a handful of islands in the Indian Ocean which were previously under the administration of Mauritius. In the 80s, Mauritius started trying to reassert its sovereignty over the islands, and while the government seemed to be keen initially, that seem to have changed. In this video, we take a look at the islands, why the UK owns them, and why the government decided to U-turn.

Rights groups in Mauritius have warned of a growing climate of repression and insecurity against government critics and journalists. Earlier this month, anti-corruption activist Bruno Laurette was arrested at his home near the capital Port Louis. Police said they found 40 kilogrammes of hashish in his possession -- but he says it was all set up.

The United Nations has said that earthquake-ravaged Morocco could ask for aid in the coming days. Aid chief Martin Griffiths said the agency is standing by to provide assistance. The 6.8-magnitude earthquake is the strongest the country has seen since at least 1900, and its deadliest in more than 60 years, killing almost 3,000 people and injuring more than 5,600 others.

A Sierra Leone court has allowed former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who is charged with treason, to travel abroad on medical grounds. Koroma, 70, was charged early this month with four offences for his alleged role in a failed military attempt to topple the West African country’s government in November.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from Freetown.

The government of South Africa has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to consider whether Israel’s plan to extend military operations in Rafah “requires that the court uses its power to prevent further imminent breach of the rights of Palestinians in Gaza”.

It said in a statement that “the Court may at any time decide to examine proprio motu whether the circumstances of the case require the indication of provisional measures which ought to be taken or complied with by any or all of the parties”.

The South African government added it was gravely concerned that the unprecedented military offensive against Rafah has already led to and will result in further large scale killing, harm and destruction, the statement said.

“This would be in serious and irreparable breach both of the Genocide Convention and of the Court’s Order of 26 January 2024. South Africa trusts this matter will receive the necessary urgency in light of the daily death toll in Gaza”, it added.

Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller has the latest from Johannesburg.

Seven months after the start of Sudan's civil war, conditions for many in the capital, Khartoum, are worse than ever - but some of those who escaped from the city in the early days are also struggling to survive.

Aid workers have also been among the victims of the conflict, with 900 security incidents involving UN workers, and 19 deaths.

This makes it the most dangerous place in the world for humanitarian workers.

Meanwhile, the UN is struggling to fund its work in the country, having only raised funds to cover a quarter of its $2.6bn (£2bn) humanitarian response plan.

Aid organizations are warning of a hunger catastrophe in Sudan as a result of the conflict there, which they describe as a forgotten war. Much of the world's attention has been elsewhere - on Russia's fighting in Ukraine and the recent war between Israel and Hamas.
In Sudan, out of nearly 25 million people in need of aid, the United Nations has only been able to reach a small fraction, and funding, even for that, is running low.
Sudan's war erupted 8 months ago after a period of tension between military chief General Abdel-Fattah Burhan and General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, who is commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The fighting has killed more than 12,000 people so far, and displaced over 6 million people. Plus, Sudan's already-struggling economy is on the verge of collapse. The UN's humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan says the situation on the ground is getting worse by the day.

Who are the paramilitary RSF and why are they in conflict with the Sudan army?

The unabated fighting has killed hundreds and tipped Africa's third-largest country - where around a quarter of people already relied on food aid - into a humanitarian disaster.

Instead of a ceasefire, the army has entered a new phase, fighting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the ground, after having stuck largely to air strikes across the capital, with fiercer clashes in central Khartoum, since the power struggle erupted.
