On 20 April 2021, news emerged that Idriss Deby, the long-time leader of the country of Chad, had died after he had gone to the front-line to visit his troops that were battling rebels belonging to a group calling itself Fact (the Front for Change and Concord in Chad).
In his 30 years as Chad's president, Idriss Deby emerged as one of Africa's wiliest political survivors, holding on to power through rebellions that reached as far as his palace gates and establishing himself as a key military ally of Western powers.
As a military commander and as president he was feared and people say he had an aura about him that meant they did not want to mess with him. And he never hesitated to crack down whenever there was some kind of threat.
Now that the dust has settled, in this episode of African Biographics, we look at the story of Idriss Deby and how he managed to hold on to power for such a long time.

South Africa's President Nelson Mandela met Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi on Tuesday to help seal an end to two decades of war in Angola.
Savimbi, whose future role in Angola remains uncertain, was given a warm welcome by Mandela, who interrupted a holiday to meet him.
President Mandela greets Jonas Savimbi a warm welcome as he arrived for the second day of talks Tuesday, near Umtata, in South Africa's Transkei region.
In an increasing role as an intermediary in African trouble spots, President Mandela interrupted his annual holiday to hold talks with the opposition rebel leader.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner has been advising Savimbi and Angolan President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos behind the scenes on the formation of a reconciliation government in the war-ravaged country.
Over 5-hundred thousand people have died Africa's longest running war, which broke out the eve of the nation's independence from Portugal in 1975.
Savimbi is hoping to win Mandela's backing of a reconciliation government.
The meeting got underway nine hours behind schedule on Monday in President Mandela's home town of Gunu, near Umtata.
The delay - caused by bad weather conditions in Angola - didn't deter the high profile delegates, Mandela's top cabinet ministers and the commanders of Savimbi's rebel group.
The naming of a government of national reconciliation in Angola is just 17 days away.
But Savimbi's role, if any, has not been announced.
His participation in the U-N-sponsored peace process is viewed as crucial.
Savimbi has so far rejected a government offer of one of two vice president's posts.
His rebel group - known as UNITA, the National union for the Total Independence of Angola - wants a special status for him as leader of the opposition.
After the meeting the delegates were shown around Mandela's holiday house overlooking the sweeping grasslands of his native Transkei region.
Talks between President Mandela and the rebel leaders are expected to continue Wednesday.

The nation state’s largest island, Grande Comore (Ngazidja) is ringed by beaches and old lava from active Mt. Karthala volcano. Around the port and medina in the capital, Moroni, are carved doors and a white colonnaded mosque, the Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi, recalling the islands’ Arab heritage.
Moroni is the capital city of the volcanic Comoros archipelago off Africa's east coast. 10 things you didn't know about Eritrea. Eritrea is a sovereign nation that is located in the horn of Africa. The country’s northern and eastern sides are all surrounded by the Red Sea. The south eastern side is bordered by Djibouti, the west side is bordered by Sudan and Ethiopia to the south. The country is usually sunny, hot, and very beautiful. According to reports, the country is the 99th largest in the world and spans across 45,406sq mile.
It is a beautiful country which houses about 5 million people. Eritrea is a multi-ethnic nation with diverse cultures and about 9 ethnic groups. The country is also a member of African union, and an Arab league observer.
In no particular order here are interesting and amazing facts about this country you probably didn't know.
10. Eritrea has no official language. One amazing fact about this country is that she they have no official language. Eritrea is a multilingual nation and all the languages spoken in the country are equal. The de facto language in the country is Tigrinya and it is majorly spoken in the southern and central parts. The language is spoken by more than two million citizens as at 2006. Other Eritrea languages are Saho, Bilen, Nara, Tig, Saho, Kunama, Beja, and Arabic. Although their previous colonial language was Italian, it is not recognized by the government. The two official working languages are English and Tigrinya.
9. Over 30% of the Eritrean freedom fighters were women. The female citizens of Eritrea played a significant role in the fight for independence. Their women had warriors who fought side by side with men in the 1810 AD. They helped in fighting against the Ethiopians and Italians. Women made up 30% of the freedom fighters which made Eritrea the country with the highest female fighters in any other liberation movements in the world. One of the reasons why women fought in the war was because the population of Eritrea was small. This is one amazing fact about the country called Eritrea.
8. No election since independence
The people of Eritrea do not know what it feels like living in a country that holds national or presidential election. Ever since they gained independence in 1993, the country has been a one-party state. Since their independence till now, they have only had one president. There has never been any presidential election since 1993 and regional elections since 2004. Their president who is named Afwerki Isaias has express hoe he felt about the western style democracy. He once revealed in an interview that Eritrea will have to wait for four decades to carry out an election. They have a total of 75 elected national assembly members since 1993 and the others were appointed.
