Niger's ruling military junta on March 16 announced that it was breaking off "with immediate effect" its military cooperation agreement with the US. Abdramane also said that the presence of US troops in Niger “is illegal and violates all the constitutional and democratic rules.” The declaration came just a day after a senior US delegation left Niger following a three-day visit to renew contact with the military junta. The US has some 1,000 troops in Niger at a desert drone base, named Air Base 201, built near Agadez in central Niger at a cost of over $100 million. The junta also took a hard line against former colonial power France, forcing the withdrawal of French troops in place for nearly a decade. Watch the video to find out more.

Also known as the ‘Uranium Capital of Africa’, Niger is the world’s fourth-largest producer of uranium ore, it provides 7.5 percent of the world's mining output, from Africa's highest-grade uranium ores, according to the World Nuclear Association. But as the usual narrative goes, uranium represents around 80 percent of the country’s exports but contributes only 5 percent to the national GDP.

Uranium is arguably the most strategic commodity for France and since its discovery in Niger a major chunk of the ore has been exclusively exported to France for over 50 years by Areva, the massive state-owned nuclear power company of France.

While Niger’s uranium lights the Eiffel Tower including one-third of households in France, add to that propping up France's nuclear superpower status, the people of Arlit and Akonan, popularly known as the twin mining towns in Niger – the real owners of this valuable wealth - are living in squalor.

When France began mining uranium ore in the deserts of northern Niger in the early 1970s they promised to build a ‘Little Paris’, in the country. However, the mining towns remain dusty and neglected, scoured by desert sandstorms and barely touched by the mineral wealth it ships off to Europe each year.

People are always trying to conjure up a magic formula for getting young people interested in the news, but two Senegalese rappers may have cracked it. Keyti and Xuman - both veterans of Dakar's huge hip-hop scene - present the Journal Rappe, a short TV show that covers the week's news in a hip-hop format. The show was launched in April as a new way for the duo to combine their music with news, politics and entertainment. Journal Rappe takes a humourous approach to current affairs but the rappers take their mission seriously, regularly criticising politicians and encouraging people to register to vote.

"I think that the only way to draw people in and capture their attention is to make the product interesting," said Keyti.

"That they see we are having a good time making it, because whether it's Xuman or me, we have been perceived as engaged and serious artists and all, and all that allows us to break the ice."

Keyti and Xuman are no strangers to Senegalese politics; they have been involved in campaigning for more than a decade. They used their music to encourage residents to register to vote ahead of the country's 2000 elections, and that ultimately helped former opposition figure Abdoulaye Wade get elected.
