People are always trying to conjure up a magic formula for getting young people interested in the news, but two Senegalese rappers may have cracked it. Keyti and Xuman - both veterans of Dakar's huge hip-hop scene - present the Journal Rappe, a short TV show that covers the week's news in a hip-hop format. The show was launched in April as a new way for the duo to combine their music with news, politics and entertainment. Journal Rappe takes a humourous approach to current affairs but the rappers take their mission seriously, regularly criticising politicians and encouraging people to register to vote.

"I think that the only way to draw people in and capture their attention is to make the product interesting," said Keyti.

"That they see we are having a good time making it, because whether it's Xuman or me, we have been perceived as engaged and serious artists and all, and all that allows us to break the ice."

Keyti and Xuman are no strangers to Senegalese politics; they have been involved in campaigning for more than a decade. They used their music to encourage residents to register to vote ahead of the country's 2000 elections, and that ultimately helped former opposition figure Abdoulaye Wade get elected. They were also involved in the Y'en a Marre campaign to oust him when he fell out of favour after two terms, and now Macky Sall is President.

Their political influence aside, Keyti and Xuman are good musicians who have a legion of loyal fans who attend their gigs and watch their content on YouTube. Report by Mark Morris.

In their latest music video, Senegalese hip hop collective Enough denounces President Macky Sall's regime, highlighting issues the press cannot cover. Rapper Fatim voices grievances against Sall's governance, calling for justice and democracy. Nationwide protests erupt following the postponement of elections, escalating into violence. Opposition condemns the delay as a constitutional coup, prompting ECOWAS intervention. Amid strikes and police brutality, civil disobedience gains momentum online. Enough, once Sall supporters, now challenge his rule, advocating for democracy through their music. Rights and civil society groups call on restraint with security forces accused of brutality. A charge the government denies.

Supporters of the presidential candidate Ousmane Sonko have clashed with police in Dakar, throwing stones and setting vehicles alight, resulting in the death of at least nine people.

Protests broke out soon after Sonko was sentenced to two years in prison for 'corrupting youth', an offence that includes having sexual relations with people under the age of 21. He was acquitted on charges of raping a woman and making death threats against her. Sonko's supporters say his legal troubles are a part of a government effort to derail his candidacy in the 2024 election. According to his legal team, the conviction will bar him from running

In tonight's edition: Macky Sall says April 2 will be the end of his mandate as president of Senegal, but a national dialogue is needed before setting a new election date. Also, Rwanda and the EU strike a deal on raw materials, but DR Congo slams the move. Plus, many unwanted old European cars end up in West Africa to be sold; an apparent bargain that can cost lives and damage the environment.

Last month the EU parliament approved a new set of immigration rules which will allow member states to send send illegal immigrants back to where they come from. They can also be detained for up to 18 months and banned from re-entering the EU for five years.

One of those who would have been affected by the new rules is 28-year-old Senegalese Omar Bar. The boat he travelled on to Europe sank. He was the only survivor.

Now he lives legally in France and campaigns to alert young Africans to the risks they are taking if they try to reach Europe. This is his story.

The Senegalese political tragedy Manipulation of the people to further one’s political cause?

By Diomaye Ndongo Faye
The history of the political development of human societies teaches us that tragedies have often occurred when two of the most prominent political leaders in a social entity put their personal interests above those of their peoples in their battle for preservation and/or conquest of power. These protagonists begin by identifying the sources of great fear, uncertainty and concern among their people and decide to use them as a rallying point for their camp. Each one poses as the one and only person capable of leading the people to the other shore where the causes that underlie these feelings will disappear thanks to the magician’s stick that only he is able to make good use of. If the institutions of this administrative space are strong enough, this tragedy can lead to their reinforcement, this was the case of the civil war of the United States from 1861 to 1865. Otherwise, it is possible to have an outcome like what is happening in Somalia today.

These two political leaders in Senegal today are President Macky Sall and the undisputed leader of the current Senegalese opposition Ousmane Sonko. These two people must look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves the following question: would I like historians to attach my name to the decay of the Republic of Senegal?
