Guinea-Bissau, officially known as the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, is a country located on the west coast of Africa. Here is some general information about Guinea-Bissau:

1. Geography: Guinea-Bissau is situated on the Atlantic coast of West Africa and is bordered by Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south and east. The country has a diverse landscape, including coastal plains, mangrove swamps, and a low-lying plateau. The Bijagós Archipelago, a group of islands, is also part of Guinea-Bissau's territory.

2. Capital and Major Cities: The capital city of Guinea-Bissau is Bissau, which is also the country's largest city. Other significant urban centers include Gabú, Bafatá, and Cacheu.

3. Language: The official language of Guinea-Bissau is Portuguese, which is inherited from its colonial history as a former Portuguese colony. Crioulo, a Portuguese-based Creole language, is widely spoken as a lingua franca among the population.

4. Ethnic Groups: Guinea-Bissau is home to various ethnic groups, with the Balanta being the largest ethnic group, followed by the Fula, Mandinka, and Pepel, among others. Each group has its own languages, cultures, and traditions.

5. Religion: The majority of the population in Guinea-Bissau practices Islam, accounting for around 45-50% of the population. Christianity, predominantly Roman Catholicism, and Protestantism, is also practiced by a significant portion of the population, while traditional indigenous beliefs and animism have a smaller following.

6. Economy: Guinea-Bissau's economy is largely dependent on agriculture, with cashew nuts being the main export crop. Fishing, forestry, and some mining activities also contribute to the economy. However, the country faces significant challenges in terms of poverty, corruption, and limited infrastructure development.

7. Political System: Guinea-Bissau is a republic with a multi-party political system. The President serves as the head of state and is elected through popular vote. The National People's Assembly is the legislative body of the country.

8. Culture: Guinea-Bissau has a rich cultural heritage with influences from various ethnic groups. Music, dance, and oral traditions are important aspects of the country's cultural expression. The traditional mask dances of the Bijagós people are particularly renowned.

It's worth noting that the situation in any country can change over time. For the most up-to-date and detailed information about Guinea-Bissau, it is advisable to refer to official sources or recent publications on the subject.

Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza announced in late 2018 he would make Gitega the new capital.
But some critics are wondering in the face of next year's general elections whether the move is political.
Bujumbura, the old capital, is an opposition base.
Others say Burundi cannot afford the relocation cost.

Al Jazeera's Catherine Soi reports from the new capital city.

The Central African Republic's dry season is coming to an end and recent heavy rains over the capital Bangui led to power and water #shortages for 10 days. But for hundreds of thousands of the city's residents, this was nothing new. The company that supplies running water to #Bangui was created in 1970, when it served some 100,000 people. The city's population has since grown to 1.5 million people, very few of whom have daily access to running water. Our correspondent Clément Di Roma reports.

The much anticipated Lesotho National Dialogue for Reforms
and the country's coalition government hang in the balance.
This follows a constitutional court ruling that nullified an amnesty clause. The clause paved the way for the return of opposition leader Mothetjoa Metsing. Metsing had demanded temporary amnesty after being in exile in South Africa for more than a year, and the parties signed an agreement to allow this, but the constitutional court ruled that the amnesty clause is unconstitutional. Long-time SADC Facilitator President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to attend the dialogue on Monday.

Clashes in Amhara between the national army and local fighters have escalated in recent weeks, prompting travel warnings from foreign governments and the cancellation of flights by the national carrier Ethiopian Airlines.
Tensions have been rising since April when the federal government announced it was dismantling regional forces including in Amhara, where nationalists felt the move would weaken Ethiopia’s second most populous region.
