Watch PMQs with British Sign Language (BSL) - https://youtube.com/live/pI9UPOvjTM0

Prime Minister's Question Time, also referred to as PMQs, takes place every Wednesday the House of Commons sits. It gives MPs the chance to put questions to the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak MP, or a nominated minister.

In most cases, the session starts with a routine 'open question' from an MP about the Prime Minister's engagements. MPs can then ask supplementary questions on any subject, often one of current political significance.

The Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer MP, asks six questions and the leader of the second largest opposition party asks two. If another minister takes the place of the Prime Minister, opposition parties will usually nominate a shadow minister to ask the questions.

Ethiopia has signed an initial ‘memorandum of understanding’ with Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, to utilize the Red Sea port of Berbera. In return, Ethiopia would formally recognize Somaliland as an independent nation, making Ethiopia the first country to do so. Elias Amare, an Eritrean American journalist, geopolitical analyst and founding member of the Asmara-based Peacebuilding Center for the Horn of Africa, explains how this agreement undermines Somali sovereignty and threatens to further escalate regional tensions.

Ethiopia's deal to lease a port in Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland has infuriated the government in Mogadishu and prompted concern it will further destabilise the region.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed on jan. 1, landlocked ethiopia would lease 20 km or 12 miles around somaliland's port of berbera for 50 years, in exchange for stakes in ethiopian state-run companies and possible recognition as an independent nation

An agreement between Ethiopia and a breakaway part of Somalia is raising tension on the Horn of Africa. Somalia regards Somaliland as part of its territory - and has warned Ethiopia against interfering in its affairs. But Ethiopia is landlocked and wants access to the sea - something Somaliland can provide.

So how will this dispute play out?
And is war a possibility?

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned Ethiopia against taking steps to implement a controversial port deal it brokered with the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on January 1, Somaliland leased landlocked Ethiopia 20km (12 miles) of its coastland around the port of Berbera, on the Gulf of Aden, for 50 years for military and commercial purposes.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Mohamud said Ethiopian assets would have to cross into Somalia’s territory in order to reach the leased area and warned Addis Ababa against taking such a step.
“So far Ethiopians haven’t come into Somalia. If they will, then that will be a problem at a different level,” Mohamud said.

Somalia has lashed out at a port deal signed by Ethiopia with the breakaway Somaliland.
Following an emergency meeting on Tuesday, the Somali cabinet said the agreement allowing Ethiopia to use the Red Sea port of Berbera is null and void.
Mogadishu also said it was recalling its ambassador to Ethiopia for deliberations, claiming that the deal endangers the region’s stability.
Landlocked since 1991, Ethiopia has relied on neighbouring Djibouti for its help in enabling most of its maritime trade. But tension has been simmering around the Horn of Africa as Addis Ababa has pushed for improved access to a seaport.

Fighting continues in #Ethiopia, where rebel groups are advancing on the capital Addis Ababa. While much has been said about the northern front, where the army is at war with the #Tigray Defense Forces (TDF), another armed group – allied to Tigrayans – is fighting from the south and west of the country. The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) now controls a large swathe of territory. Together, the TDF and OLA plan to topple the government and take over the capital. The #government accuses these rebel groups of committing crimes against civilians, including several massacres. Our regional correspondent reports.
