Despite a huge diversity of species, many of which making their way into the homes of the ancient Egyptians, like us they had a preference for cats and dogs.

The two had different places in society - cats were highly revered while 'dog' was sometimes used in a derogatory way - but some of the contrasts might surprise you.

If you are a animal lover and curious to explore a real popular Egyptian market, then the Friday Market is the place you should go to.
In El-Sayeda Aisha market, located in the heart of Old Cairo, you can find dogs, birds, reptiles, monkeys, crocodiles, and even beavers.
Some of the traders have been working here for decades, making this market a real local Egyptian place every animal lover would like to visit.

Under the Muqattam Hills in Cairo lies the City of the Dead; 2.5 square miles of Islamic-era cemeteries, where the cities poorest have built their humble homes, living amongst the tombs. In a section of this neighborhood called Sayed Aisha you will find the Friday Market, also known as the Animal Market. You will find everything from turtles to cats and dogs, from fish to falcons to parrots and monkeys. Come along with me as I visit this chaotic and crowded market to witness yet another side of life in Cairo.

Join our Egyptologist, Ashley Cooke, as he takes us on a 5,000-year journey uncovering the many mysteries and hidden stories that lie within the Ancient Egypt gallery at World Museum. In part 2/5 of our mini series, we take a closer look at animal mummies and how animals were messengers to the Gods!

In the ancient burial ground at Saqqara, Egypt, one animal cemetery alone has yielded over four million individual ibis mummies. And the nearby dog cemetery contained over seven million mummies, with countless others found throughout Egypt. This unusual aspect of ancient Egyptian culture and religion—the mummification of animals—has remained largely a mystery. Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt explores the religious purpose of these mummies, how they were made, and why there are so many.

Drawn from our renowned collection, the exhibition features choice examples from among the many millions of mummies of birds, cats, dogs, snakes, and other animals preserved from at least thirty-one different cemeteries throughout Egypt. Animals were central to the ancient Egyptian worldview. Most animals had connections to a particular deity. After death, mummified animals’ souls could carry a message to a god.

Yet not all animal mummies are what they seem. Scientific investigation of the mummies reveals that the corruption in the animal cemeteries that some contemporaneous texts allege was all too real. CT scans displayed in the exhibition uncover the empty wrappings, double mummies, and misleading packaging among some of the mummies that the priests sold to worshippers.

Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt is organized by Edward Bleiberg, Senior Curator of Egyptian Art, and Yekaterina Barbash, Associate Curator of Egyptian Art, Brooklyn Museum. The accompanying book is published by the Brooklyn Museum in association with D. Giles Ltd, London.

Salima Ikram, Visiting Professor, Yale University; Distinguished University Professor, Department of Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology, The American University in Cairo

The relationship between humans and animals is complex, with mutual dependencies that are practical, psychological, and even theological. Ancient Egyptian animal mummies are a particular manifestation of this web of interrelations. Salima Ikram discussed different types of Egyptian animal mummies and explained how and why they were made, the theological and aesthetic decisions that went into their “packaging,” and what each type meant to the ancient Egyptians. She also illustrated how animal mummies shape perceptions of ancient Egypt and influence contemporary thought and art.

Recorded Oct. 12, 2017.

Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities on Saturday revealed details of recently discovered animal mummies, saying they contain five lion cubs as well as several cats, birds and crocodiles. Mostafa Wazeri, secretary-general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, described the discovery of the lion mummies as "the most lovely surprise." He also highlighted a stone scarab, a type of beetle, believed to be the largest of its kind ever found.
