Man's Made in Rwanda
Designer Nyambo MasaMara speaks a language of colour, pattern and art.
The art and design scene of Cape Town is worlds away from the reality that Nyambo MasaMara was born into in nineties Rwanda. Since arriving here aged twelve, he’s gone on to become a ground-breaking fashion designer and artist, expressing his stories in vivid pattern and colour.
Nyambo shares that MasaMara means “Something from nothing,” and that he chose the name MasaMara because the brand was born out of nothing-more than willpower and passion.

The business woman by Nature.
Nzuli Collection by Teddy Gaju.
Teddy Gaju is a young entrepreneur, founder of Nzuli Collection, a local fashion line that makes women's hair bonnets, bath-robes, home-shoes and make-up bags all in Kitenge Fabric. Gaju describes herself as a business woman by nature, but it was only when she started her own business that she discovered the true meaning of this statement.
It was in the middle of a pandemic, Gaju was looking for something profitable to do. “ It was right after the first covid Lockdown in Rwanda and I started asking myself what I should do next. I started making hair bonnets for women.” Gaju said. The first batch of 200 bonnets was sold in less than two weeks, and the business was up and running.
Everyone liked Nzuli Collection’s bonnets and Gaju was even more determined to make her business big with the introduction of new products. “ After some time, I started making bath-robes, home-shoes and make-up bags and people would buy my products as sets.” Gaju added.
Today Gaju is happy to have a growing clientele in Rwanda and hope to soon expand outside the country. Gaju credits her business success to her combatant spirit to never give up and positivity.
But her journey was not all good news. “My biggest challenge when I started was not getting enough sales as I wanted. ” Gaju said. She adds that the other challenge she faced was getting the quality fabric on time. ” I had to order all the fabric from Ghana or china and this would be expensive and would sometimes cause delays.” Gaju states.
Gaju’s advice to young people is to be open to opportunities. “Allow yourself to think, allow yourself to socialize and network. Gaju exclaims. She adds that being open to things like friendships can open opportunities.
