Eritrea remains one of the least visited countries in the world for a reason. On top of the visa issues, in order to travel anywhere outside of the capital – Asmara, or attend national events you need each individual permit. These permits aren’t the easiest to obtain due to the country’s bureaucracy and they’re often rejected.
I spent a full week exploring different corners of Eritrea, one of the most mysterious countries in the world.

Rebuilding Railways (April 1996)
Antiquated, iron trains have stood abandoned for 20 years during Eritrea's war with Ethiopia. Now an army of veteran rail workers and their new apprentices are coaxing them back to life.

Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscri....ption_center?add_use

The Eritrean people are determined to reconstruct their dilapidated railway without any outside help. In the hot, dusty hills, they rescue the old rails from bunkers used during the war. All 169,000 steel sleepers have to be dug up from the ground, straightened and hauled back to the original track. They aim to complete 120 km of track, snaking from the coast to the capital. Transport Minister, Giorgis Teklemikael, says Eritrea's self-reliance and 'can do' philosophy will prevail. A train operating between Massawa and its suburbs is the first sign of success.

Eritrea officially the State of Eritrea, is a country in the Horn of Africa region of Eastern Africa, with its capital and largest city at Asmara.
Eritreans, along with Northern Ethiopians, have a genetically unique phenotype. They are genetically connected to tribes in the Mediterranean, such as Berbers and Arabs. This could be one of the reasons why they are strikingly beautiful.

30th anniversary commemoration of Operation Fenkil
Each year, in the month of February, Massawa takes center stage in the heart of Eritrea as it commemorates Operation Fenkil. History has come to many places, has stayed awhile and, after its departure, has rendered those places famous. In Eritrea’s saga, perhaps no place has taken on greater historic importance than the Northern Red Sea city of Massawa. Operation Fenkil would forever hold a place in the minds of all Eritreans.

On February 8, 1990, the EPLF forces began the offensive by cutting off the critical supply route from Massawa to the Asmara garrison. The surprise attack stunned the Ethiopian military and by the following afternoon the EPLF forces were in the suburbs of Massawa. On the third day of the offensive, the Eritrean forces captured the Ethiopian naval base near the town. The only remaining portions of the city to rid of Ethiopian troops were the islands. Operation Fenkil was one of the most decisive military operations that heralded the end of Ethiopian colonialism in Eritrea.
The operation was carried out through the coordinated attack of the infantry, the mechanised and the then nascent naval forces of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF).
The port city of Massawa was crucial for the Ethiopian Second Division. It had been a life-line for the shipment of its armaments and other logistics.

Understanding the importance of the port city to the survival of its war machinery, the Dergue regime spent many years building strong fortifications that surrounded Massawa.

The gallant Eritrean freedom fighters scored a decisive military victory over the then biggest army in Sub-Saharan Africa that was armed to the teeth with sophisticated Soviet weaponry. “The operation was a pinnacle of success to the EPLF besides proving its steadfastness and just cause,” said Mr. Andebrhan chair of the association of the former 16th and 70th EPLF divisions. “After the demise of the Nadew command, the collapse of the Ethiopian army in Operation Fenkil was another crucial turning point in the history of the armed struggle,” he added.

It was simply a bitter pill to swallow for the Dergue soldiers that they would never henceforth defeat the Eritrean freedom forces.

Eritrea, located in the Horn of Africa along the Red Sea, has a rich cultural and historical heritage and offers unique tourist attractions. Here are some of the key tourist destinations and attractions in Eritrea:

Asmara: The capital city, Asmara, is known for its well-preserved Italian colonial architecture. Visitors can explore the Art Deco buildings, including the famous Fiat Tagliero Building, which resembles an airplane. Asmara's relaxed atmosphere and vibrant cafe culture make it an enjoyable place to wander.

Massawa: This historic port city on the Red Sea coast is known for its Ottoman-era architecture, ancient mosques, and bustling markets. Massawa offers opportunities for beach activities and water sports, and it's a gateway to the Dahlak Archipelago, a group of islands known for their marine biodiversity.

Keren: Keren is Eritrea's second-largest city and is famous for its colorful and lively markets, including the open-air goat and camel markets. The city also has several historic sites, such as the British War Cemetery and the Italian War Memorial.

Dahlak Archipelago: This group of islands in the Red Sea is a paradise for divers and snorkelers, offering crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. Visitors can explore shipwrecks, enjoy water sports, and experience the archipelago's unique culture.

Debre Bizen Monastery: Located atop a mountain near Asmara, this ancient monastery offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and provides insight into Eritrea's religious heritage.

Matara: Matara is known for its ancient rock-hewn churches, some of which date back over a thousand years. The landscape surrounding Matara is also visually striking.

Qohaito: Qohaito is an archaeological site that features ancient ruins, including the well-preserved Temple of Mariam Wakino. The site offers a glimpse into Eritrea's history and civilization.

The Filfil Solomons: This lush and mountainous region is known for its biodiversity and hiking trails. The Semienawi Bahri National Park, part of the Filfil Solomons, is a protected area that boasts diverse wildlife and ecosystems.

Adi Keyh: This town is known for its scenic beauty and proximity to the Adi Keyh agricultural project, where terraced fields showcase Eritrea's agricultural traditions.

Beaches: Eritrea's Red Sea coastline features beautiful beaches, including Ghelalo, Assab, and other coastal areas, where visitors can relax and enjoy the sea.

Cultural Festivals: Eritrea hosts various cultural festivals and events throughout the year, celebrating its diverse ethnic groups and traditions.

Scenic Drives: Eritrea offers stunning drives through mountainous terrain and along the picturesque coastline, making road trips a memorable part of the travel experience.

Eritrea's tourism industry is still developing, but the country's unique blend of historical sites, cultural heritage, and natural beauty makes it an intriguing destination for adventurous travelers interested in exploring less-visited parts of East Africa. It's essential to check travel advisories and regulations before planning a trip to Eritrea, as the situation can change.

Why did Yugoslavia Collapse?

Yugoslavia. For many, a long-forgotten failed nation. For others, an all-too-painful, and recent, memory. A once-united federation made up of six neighboring republics, Yugoslavia’s existence was never a simple one. With constant ethnic and religious division, it seems that it was only a matter of time before a breakup would be imminent. But was that the only cause of Yugoslavia’s collapse? And how did the ethnic disputes actually lead to the destruction of an entire federation?...

Guinea, officially the Republic of Guinea, is a country on the West coast of Africa whose capital is Conakry.

Guinea has a northern border with Guinea-Bissau, Senegal and Mali; and a southern border with Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Ivory Coast.

The nation forms a crescent as it curves from its western border on the Atlantic Ocean toward the east and the south. The sources of the Niger River, Gambia River, and Senegal River are all found in the Guinea Highlands.

Like every year in April, the Guinean capital is organising the "72 hours of books". This event brings together writers from the country and the continent, publishers and readers. It is an opportunity to put books in the spotlight in this country where more than half the population is illiterate, libraries are rare and books are inaccessible. A report from Conakry by FRANCE 24's Sarah Sakho, Malick Diakité and Sam Bradpiece.

In August of 2018 I spent 4 weeks on the island of New Guinea. Half of that time was in Papua New Guinea, discovering many beautiful tribal communities and three incredible festivals. The preparation for these festivals was often more wondrous than the spectacle of the festival itself, so the first half of the video is devoted to that preparation, while the second half is devoted to the dance, music, and artistry of these amazing tribes.

Festivals:
- Mount Hagen Cultural Festival
- 4th Annual Middle Sepik Festival
- Paiya Mini Show

Thanks to Beth Whitman and WanderTours for guidance and insights on our journeys across this magnificent country, as well as to my travel mates for their assistance and patience when getting these shots.
