In northern Tanzania, claims of forcible eviction from the Maasai community have sparked protests in a growing fight with the government. A Maasai delegation is currently in Europe, seeking international help to stop the authorities from moving Maasai communities out of Loliondo, near the Kenyan border, and the Ngorongoro Crater conservation area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Both areas are famous for high-end safari tourism, which contributes significantly to the economy, and the Tanzanian government says they must be protected. But the Maasai claim the decision to relocate them from these lands has destroyed both their lives and livelihoods.

Tanzania is observing a period of national mourning after the death of President John Magufuli.
Officials say the 61-year-old died of heart problems - but political opponents suspect he was sick with COVID-19.
Magufuli was one of the continent's most prominent coronavirus sceptics, encouraging people to focus on prayer instead of lockdowns and vaccines.
Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan has taken his place on Friday, becoming the country's first female leader.
Al Jazeera's Catherine Soi reports from Nairobi, Kenya.

For months Tanzania has been a country in denial after its President, John Magufuli, claimed Covid had been defeated by three days of national prayer.

On Wednesday, Magufuli died at the age of 61. His deputy said it was heart failure but that hasn't stopped the rumours that it was the very virus he denied.

As Gaza and Ukraine dominate the headlines, the crisis in Sudan continues to escalate. Ten months of war between Sudan's army and its allies turned enemies, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, have left more than half the population there in need of aid.

Nearly eight million people have been displaced, making it the largest crisis of its kind in the world.

Millions of Sudanese have fled the country, mainly to Egypt, South Sudan, Chad or beyond.

In the last week, Sudan's Armed Forces have retaken most of Omdurman, which is considered the twin city to the capital Khartoum, from the Rapid Support Forces.

But the RSF still controls Darfur state, where tens of thousands of people are stuck in camps like Zamzam near El Fasher.

Sudan’s latest ceasefire appears to be holding, despite early breaches of the deal.

There were reports of air strikes and clashes in the capital Khartoum as the ceasefire came into force on Monday evening.

It is hoped the ceasefire will enable the delivery of badly needed humanitarian aid.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force broke out five weeks ago, with an estimated 700 people killed and more than one million displaced.
