To the outside world, Senegal has appeared to be one of West Africa's more stable democracies, at least until now. But internally, the political scene is in turmoil. The country was supposed to be having elections in just over two weeks time, but President Macky Sall, who was due to step down, instead postponed the exercise. And that's sparked anger.
In recent years, political protests have become more common in Senegal and human rights groups have accused the country's security forces of using excessive force to crack down on dissent. While the threat of violence awaits those taking to the streets, some Senegalese are also using art to express their grievances, as DW’s Sira Thierij reports from Dakar.

Senegal’s President has postponed the presidential election which was due to be held later this month.
In an address to the nation, Macky Sall cited a dispute involving the constitutional court over the rejection of certain candidates.
But the indefinite postponement has prompted resignations, and drawn anger from opposition groups.

Senegalese lawmakers voted late Monday (February 5) to delay this month’s presidential election until December, an unprecedented move that has sparked international concern over a country normally seen as a beacon of stability in West Africa. The bill was passed near unanimously, with 105 votes in favor and one against, after opposition deputies were forcibly removed from the chamber.

Senegal's Constitutional Council has ruled that parliament's postponement of the Feb. 25 presidential election to December was not in line with the constitution, council minutes showed on Thursday. Opposition presidential candidates and lawmakers had filed a number of legal challenges to last week's parliamentary bill, which also extended President Macky Sall's mandate in what critics said amounted to an "institutional coup."

Senegal's President, Macky Sall, made a surprise announcement - indefinitely postponing elections scheduled for later this month.
He cited controversy surrounding the disqualification of some presidential candidates.

Senegal is in the midst of its worst political upheaval in decades after the president postponed this month's election. More than 200 opposition politicians and protesters have been arrested, and the government has shut down some internet access, amid what the decision's opponents are describing as a coup. "This is just the latest step in a string of human rights abuses," says Amnesty International researcher Ousmane Diallo, who says Sall's latest anti-democratic move is characteristic of an increasingly repressive regime. We also hear from former Prime Minister Aminata Touré, who broke from Sall's political coalition in 2022 after accusing him of anti-democratic actions. Touré, now a leading opposition figure, was arrested Sunday at a protest. And we are joined by Mamadou Diouf, professor of African studies at Columbia University, who says Sall has been trying to circumvent the Senegalese presidency's two-term limit since his 2019 reelection. Touré and Diouf describe Senegal as an outlier in West Africa for its postcolonial record of strong democratic systems. "We will do whatever we need to do to keep the foundation of our democracy solid," says Touré.
