Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Remarks on Sao Tome and Principe Cutting Ties with Taiwan

Evaristo Carvalho is the new president of Sao Tome and Principe after the the Constitutional Court decalred the final results on Friday.

Carvalho who was the ruling party’s candidate and one time prime minister won the first round of the presidential election with 50.1% of the votes against the incumbent President Manuel Pinto da Costa, who boycotted the second round.

The inauguration of the new president is scheduled for September 3 in Sao Tome.

Independent Democratic Action (ADI, opposition), led by former Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada, won Sunday's legislative elections in Sao Tome and Principe, with a total of 36,549 votes, according to preliminary data released today by the National Electoral Commission (CEN).

The provisional figures for the legislative elections were presented tonight at the CEN headquarters in the capital, more than 29 hours after the polls closed, a delay that prompted protests from ADI militants, who burned tyres near the CEN offices, which were surrounded by the military.

The Western African island country of Sao Tome and Principe announced today it was terminating diplomatic relations with Taiwan and establishing relations with China. Foreign Minister David Lee denied speculation that the move was linked with the Tsai administration''s refusal to acknowledge the 1992 consensus. But he did suggest the African country was motivated by financial promises from China. The flag of Sao Tome and Principe no longer appears in the lineup of the flags of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in the lobby of the Foreign Ministry. David LeeForeign MinisterGiven the size of Sao Tome and Principe’s financial shortfall, Taiwan had no way to fulfill its needs, and so it disregarded its nearly 20-year alliance with Taiwan, playing both sides of the strait off against one another in an attempt to get a better deal. Reports suggest Sao Tome and Principe had previously requested US$210 billion in aid from Taiwan. Though Foreign Minister Lee didn’t confirm that number, he did say that the country had earlier submitted some outlandish requests to Taiwan for financial support.David LeeForeign MinisterSao Tome and Principe definitely brought up some astronomical figures (in one of their requests), but under our current approach of “steadfast diplomacy,” we weren’t willing to play these money games. Today at noon, President Tsai convened a high-level national security meeting in response to the incident. An official statement released after the meeting said that Taiwan didn’t need to use money to compete with China in diplomacy, and said that the Foreign Ministry would conduct a detailed review of the country’s existing aid arrangements with its diplomatic allies.

The president of west African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe has bowed out of the second round of the presidential elections slated for next Sunday.

At least 29 soldiers have been killed in an attack in western Niger, according to the country’s defence ministry.
A three-day national mourning period was declared in the country on Tuesday over the incident that involved “improvised explosive devices and kamikaze vehicles by more than a hundred terrorists”, according to a televised statement made by the ministry on Monday night.
It added that two soldiers were seriously wounded and “several dozen terrorists” were also killed.
The attack took place near the country’s border with Mali during military operations aimed at “neutralising the threat posed” by the ISIL (ISIS) armed group in the area, according to the ministry.

Military chiefs from the West African regional bloc Ecowas are meeting to discuss the deployment of a standby force for possible military intervention to restore democracy in Niger.

The gathering is taking place on Thursday and Friday in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

At least 11 of the bloc's 15 member states back a military deployment to reinstate the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, after diplomatic efforts failed to yield any positive result.

Niger's coup leaders have warned they will defend themselves against any intervention.
