Peter Mutharika has governed the small African nation of Malawi since 2014.

He is a lawyer and professor who ran for a second five-year term in elections earlier this year.

But opposition parties said there were irregularities in the vote - and the high court temporarily prevented the results from being released.

The electoral commission has since declared the 79-year-old Mutharika the winner of that vote leading to thousands of Malawians to protest against that decision.

Police fired tear gas at protesters as the government accused the opposition of attempting to overthrow Mutharika by force.

Now, as he begins his new term, Mutharika faces several issues - including corruption, poverty and healthcare.

We will ask him what he intends to do to tackle these challenges.

The votes are being counted again in Malawi's presidential election - after an attempt by the current president to order a re-run of the poll. Malawi opposition parties celebrated through Monday night an apex court ruling nullifying the May 2019 reelection of President Peter Mutharika.

The 5-member court concluded that due to irregularities recorded, Mutharika had not been duly elected further ordering the elections body to organize fresh polls in 150 days.

Prior to the 2020 presidential elections in Malawi, several political parties formed an electoral alliance called "Tonse" to challenge the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). They accused the DPP of committing various wrongdoings. However, within two and a half years of their term, cracks appeared in the alliance, causing some members to leave while others remained. We sought the opinion of Khumbo Kachale, the former Vice President of Malawi and President of the Freedom Party, which is a member of the "Tonse" alliance.

Malawi's high court has lifted a recent government's suspension of the head of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Martha Chizuma, a move that could see here return to work sooner than expected.

Malawi's Vice-President Saulos Chilima has been arrested on allegations that he accepted money in exchange for awarding government contracts.

He is accused of receiving 280 thousand dollars and other items from a British businessman Zuneth Sattar.

In Malawi, the corruption scandal known as Cashgate shocked the nation when it broke in 2013, where government officials were accused of stealing millions of dollars in public funds through fraudulent contracts. Malawi's constitutional court ordered a rerun of the disputed polls which saw Mutharika re-elected.
